Census 2010: Darien's Population Hits 20,732 [Updated]

The U.S. Census Bureau released data for Connecticut Wednesday afternoon.

There were 20,732 people living in Darien as of 2010, according to data released Wednesday by the U.S. Census Bureau, representing a 5.7 percent increase over ten years earlier.

That rise was reflected across a broad range of self-reported racial categories, including white (up 5.7 percent), black or African American (up 16.8 percent), Asian (up 57.0 percent), "some other race" (up 108.6 percent), and two or more races (up 46.5 percent).

The number of Darien residents identifying as Hispanic or Latino also jumped significantly from 429 to 743, a 73.2 percent increase.

The town's population increase compares to a 4.9 percent jump across Connecticut and a 3.9 percent uptick across Fairfield County.

Notably, the 15.9 percent increase in the number of Darien residents under 18 — from 6,364 in 2000 to 7,381 in 2010 — dramatically outpaced overall growth, a figure that is reflected in the still-rising enrollments facing . Minors accounted for 35.6 percent of all Darien residents in the census.

Across the state, the number of people identifying as white decreased while black/African American, Hispanic, and Asian populations increased both in Fairfield County and in Connecticut.

Fairfield County came in as the largest county in Connecticut with 916,829 residents, or 3.9 percent more than in 2000. Other top counties include Hartford, New Haven, New London, and Litchfield.

Of the state's most populated cities, neighboring Stamford comes in fourth with 122,643 people — up 4.7 percent — behind Bridgeport, New Haven, and Hartford. Norwalk ranked sixth.

The census data will likely have a signifcant impact on the state's redrawing of congressional and state legislative districts. The official 2010 Census Redistricting Data Summary File can be used to shape federal, state and local legislative districts under Public Law 94-171.

Calls to Democratic and Republican members of the Legislative Management Committee were not immediately returned Wednesday.
