Darien's 50 Highest Business Property Taxpayers

Here are the 50 businesses in town with the highest assessments on "personal property"—a misnomer for equipment, furnishings and other non-real estate property owned by businesses (not individuals) and taxed by municipalities.

The biggest taxpayer in Darien isn't an owner of a Maserati, and it isn't a country club—it's the electric utility, Connecticut Light & Power, which pays taxes on $86.4 million in assessed property.

That's more than all the other taxable business equipment, furniture and fixtures in the rest of town, combined. The total assessed value of that kind of property, incongruously callled "personal property" by Connecticut's taxing bureaucracy: $160,292,606.

The other $73.8 million in taxed personal property in Darien is mostly owned by the next 49 top-ranked businesses in town. No. 2 on the list is also a utility—Aquarion Water Co., assessed at $7.8 million—as is Yankee Gas, a provider of natural gas and ranked No. 4 at $3.7 million.

Stop & Shop is listed twice on the list—once for each of its two supermarkets in town. The Noroton Heights supermarket, with $1.6 million in taxable, non-real estate property, is assessed at almost twice the size of the larger Stop & Shop in the Goodwives Shopping Center ($872,580).

The list has names familiar and less familiar to town residents: Darien's country clubs are on it, although not the Country Club of Darien. Whole Foods Market, with an assessment of $3.1 million and only in town for a few years, is the largest payer of business property taxes among retailers. Zotos International, the third-largest payer of personal property taxes ($5.8 million) is located in an office building on Tokeneke Road, just south of Interstate 95.

Several restaurants are also on the list: Ten Twenty Post (No. 18) and chain restaurants Bertucci's (No. 31), Panera (No. 41) and Chipotle Mexican Grill (No. 50).

The list of highest personal property tax assessments is published by the Darien Assessor's Office (see attached PDFs).

We should take the money CLP is paying and use it to make sure we're better prepared for storms.. oh wait, that makes too much sense for to actually happen.
