Darien's good Samaritans.

The past few days have seen Darienites unite, and the following is a list of the town's good Samaritans and the services they're offering.

If you'd like to give props to a local business, or thank your neighbor for that great meal or hot shower, just post a comment. Alternatively, email your tips and thank-yous to cecelia@patch.com, and we'll post your news for the community to see.

Darien Library

The community's favored warming shelter, the Darien Library is extending its hours once again and will remain open through 11 p.m. Wednesday's matinee series continues today at 2 p.m. with a free screening of Up in the Air (R; 109 minutes). The Hurt Locker starts at 8 p.m. (R; 131 minutes).

Parks & Recreation

Organized soccer and basketball will be held at the Town Hall Gym from noon through 4 p.m., courtesy of Darien Parks & Recreation and Darien High School soccer coach John Bradley.

"We're offering the free clinic as something for the kids to do whilst they are off school," said Bradley.

Soccer will run from noon to 2 p.m. Basketball will follow through 4 p.m. Bradley says parents needn't stay to chaperon, just drop the kids off with a soccer ball or basketball if you have one on hand.

Fabricare Cleaners

Staring at a mounting pile of laundry? Fabricare Cleaners wants to help.

The drycleaners in the Noroton Heights commercial district has extended its wash and fold laundry service—free of charge—to those residents unable to do laundry at home. If would like Fabricare to pick up your laundry, email service@fabricarecleaners.net or call 203-229-0001.

Uncle's Deli

Four hours out of the fridge is all it takes for fresh food to perish; a bit longer for frozen foods. "If you need refrigeration space and you're local, just put your food in a box with your name on it," said Rob at Uncle's Deli.

Fairbanks Photo

Helping residents chronicle the storm, George McKnight of Fairbanks Photo is offering a photo-service discount through Saturday, on any storm damage photos. In addition, McKnight says he's happy to share his wireless network with any residents unable to go online, just stop by the shop's new location at 1096 Post Road.

YMCA

Darien residents in need of a hot shower, can find one at the YMCA. Not a member? Not to worry, said DJ Orr. "Just bring a towel," she said.

Upper Crust Bagel & Deli

Because clearing the streets and restoring safety takes a lot of energy, Darien's favorite bagel shop, Upper Crust, is offering Darien Public Works crews a discounted lunch, with $4 sandwiches and drinks for a buck.

Top kudos to the Darien Library and staff for long hours and extra patience as they became every resident's "second home" and recharging station this week.

Kudo's to the Darien PD for their updates and advisories.

A field-promotion and oak leaf cluster to David Bayne as Acting First Selectman.

And biggest kudo's of all to Cecelia and the Darien Patch for the best coverage ever of a breaking news event!

Nancy Haddad thanks the Sugar Bowl:

A BIG thank you to Bob and the Sugar Bowl Crew! Our family spent a few nights at the DoubleTree in Norwalk. We checked out and decided to brave the crowd at the Sugar Bowl in Darien. Much to our surprise and delight, there were four spaces at the counter (our favorite spot) when we walked in the door! I turned around to say hello to a neighbor and when I looked back a cup of coffee was on the counter and all three of my children had a hot breakfast in front of them. When my teenage son finished in record time, Bob came by with a couple more pancakes—just like home! Our thanks go out to Bob for his awesome service and to the entire Sugar Bowl crew for keeping us fed!

Once we get through this mess, I hope everyone will remember that the library that was there to support all of us during this crisis needs our support to exist.

"Donations buy all the books, magazines, audio books, DVDs, compact discs, programs, and information resources that Library patrons enjoy. Town tax dollars pay salaries and operating expenses only."

All of the above mentioned deserve our heart felt thanks -- as do the scores of volunteers in all three fire departments and Post 53 for yeoman duty above and beyond, the police, as noted for keeping everyone able to navigate the town's roads and a special thanks to Cecelia for her omnipresent coverage!

Speaking on behalf of herself, her family and friends, Mary Lou Cleary of the Representative Town Meeting took to the podium last night to give a "warm thank you to town employees and volunteers in face of unprecedented disaster."

Cleary also thanked Selectman David Bayne who served as Acting First Selectman, Sunday through Thursday.

"Your dedication to the community is greatly appreciated. Thank you," she said.
