Updated, Thursday, 1:20 p.m.
Just before 12:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon, there were less than a dozen protestors at Tilley Pond Park with organizer Margaret Rague for day two of "Occupy Darien."
"There's a lull right now," she told Patch. "But people having been coming and going all morning."
Rague added that Rolf Maurer, who ran for numerous political offices in the state for the Green Party, will join Richard Duffee and David Bedell later in the afternoon to speak with protestors.
New Canaan resident and "Occupy Darien" protestor Hector Lopez told Patch that having an "Occupy" event in southern Fairfield County is very significant.
"It shows that not everybody in these are towns are a part of the one percent," he told Patch. "There are people living in New Canaan, Darien and Greenwich that same complaints as everyone else."
According to the Darien Times, Maurer agreed to pay $1,000 to bring in protestors from New York City, but it was unclear as to whether anyone had taken her up on the offer.
According to town officials, taxpayers will pay $10,000 in overtime for police to staff "Occupy Darien."
Original Story:
The organizer of today's widely anticipated 'Occupy' event said Darien is the "perfect" place for it.
Margaret Rague told Patch that 'Occupy Darien' makes sense because Darien itself "has more Wall Street people than any other single town in the nation."
"What better place could there possibly be?" the 61-year-old Darien resident said.
Hours before 'Occupy Darien' is scheduled to begin—the event is scheduled to run 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in Tilley Pond Park—neither police nor Rague herself have a strong sense of how many people will show up.
The live blog above will launch at 10 a.m. with live updates and photos from the park. Readers are welcome to share their thoughts on 'Occupy Darien' or the wider 'Occupy' movement.
Tweets hashtagged '#OccupyDarien' will feed into the live blog.
Darien Patch account-holders' remarks paint a picture of sharp division. In advance of today's live blog, here's a snapshot of pro- and anti-'Occupy Darien' comments:
Occupy Darien Event Scheduled for Dec. 21-22
- Joyce Ishimata: A bunch of unemployed whiners, accumulating human feces, and ranting about 99 vs 1 are hardly Ghandiesque. The 1% pay 50% of the taxes--the OWS pay none. What are these people complaining about? The money they dont pay going places they have no idea about? When people like you tell the world that wall street stole 14 trillion, it gives me comfort that there is no basis whatsoever for OWS.
- Eileen: Tell that to the teachers, firefighters, veterans, "elderly" that are a part of OWS. I'm sure they'd appreciate your "feces" comment as well. Obviously I support OWS and I own a home and have job, so by your thinking I don't pay taxes and "accumulate human feces" (BTW, did you think that one up by yourself???)
Occupy Darien Organizer Accuses Police of Brutality, False Arrest [Update]
- donkeybuster: Welcome to Crazytown. Population: You.
- Dave: I don't agree with either the tea party or OWS but admire their tenacity and recognize that they are changing the conversation in America and helping to bring us back to the middle.
Occupy Darien to Cost $10,000 in Police Overtime
- citizenbrwn: I'm not for or against-just for the right to free speech and the right to assembly. Saying the worst case scenario is..."people showing up"..is really telling. Not riots or violence...just people "who don't belong here' showing up. I didn't realize that park spaces in this town weren't public@@. You don't have to support the movement, but don't smirk as amendment rights of people you disagree with are stomped on. It's a slippery slope to all of our rights being trashed. I'd hope people here are not that ignorant.
- Jean D.: I don't think anyone is suggesting that free speech be prohibited. I think maybe paying for others free speech is kind of annoying. I also dont think anyone is suggesting the parks aren't public. Most would just like them to be inhabited lawfully and not cost the taxpayer extra.

Thes Occupy Wall Street movement is really harmiful to the American society. However, I do understand why Occupy folks are upset; they have the similar concerns as the Tea Party folks. Both are concerned about the future of the Unitied States and the lack of opportunities for personal growth. The key difference is ideology. Occupy Wall Street thinks that the root cause of the current economic stagnation is due to the capitalists (ie the top 1% ). While the Tea Party folks believe is the overreaching federal government.
I disagree more with the Occupy folks because they think that "haves" do not pay their fair share of taxes (a propaganda theme from the Obama Administration). I disagee w/ this premise because 1) top 1% and 5% pay a large share of the tax burden, while the bottom 50% don't pay any taxes; and 2) the top 1% brings tremenous economic benefits to the remaining 99% (if top 1% left the country or shifted their capital out of the United States, the remaining 99% will be much poorer, (eg study Argentina's economic history).
To correct our problem, we need 100% of America to come together and make fundamental reform in our tax code, regulations, education, health system, entitlements, etc. We need to reduce the federal cost burden to a level that is aligned to the historical federal tax revenues which is 18% of GDP. Increasing taxes will not fix it. We gave a spending bubble at fed & state levels, which will get worse with the aging population.

Sorry I couldn;t make it. I'm busy occupying my desk. At my job. Where I do work. To pay taxes. To support. Folks protesting me. That want more of my money. While doing nothing. If anyone of them are serios about wanting work, I need some brush cleared in my yard. I'd be happy to pay minimum wage. If they don;t accept the offer. They don't really want to work. They just want free handouts.

Im no expert, but by the pictures I see , it appears that there are less than 5,000 people there ( it looks like around 11 people, 4 geese, 3 squirrels, and 15 cops).
To the people wondering who would clean up the mess, I have a glad sandwich bag that might take care of 99% of the trash. (I saw 20% of the crowd put a coffee cup down (2 styrofoam cups).

I am in favor of this occupy protest. I have lived the Wall Street life. Yes, I really rose to the rank of CEO. Oh the things I have seen. There is far too much arrogance associated with money and Wall Street. I eventually left that world. Sure I could have stayed and made more money, but at what cost? Spending 12 hours a day hanging around people who turned my stomach. Do you know what it's like to go to dinner at a restaurant and have the person dining with me loudly and crudely gargle their wine?? Everyone else in the restaurant is turning to look at us as this moron is making a hideously loud spewing sound so as to enhance the flavor, or so he says. I'm convinced it had more to do with getting everyone to look at him. That world has far to much arrogance for my taste. Glad to be done with it. Rally on OWS!

Holy cow, FormerCEO... I have no idea where to begin with this post. But I'll try...
"I have lived the Wall Street life" (LOVED IT!). "I really rose to the rank of CEO. Oh the things I have seen" (I'M IMPORTANT, I HAVE CREDIBILITY). "There is far too much arrogance associated with money and Wall Street" (TRUST ME, I SHOULD KNOW). "Sure I could have stayed and made more money" (ACTUALLY, THAT'S WRONG- I BLEW UP MY COMPANY WITH LEVERED BETS). "Do you know what it's like to go to dinner at a restaurant and have the person dining with me loudly and crudely gargle their wine??" (IT'S AWESOME, TRY THE VEAL SPECIAL). "That world has far too much arrogance for my taste" (ONCE AGAIN, I SHOULD KNOW!). "Glad to be done with it." (NOW THAT I'VE MADE A TON OF LOOT). "Rally on OWS!" (JEEZ, I HOPE THE PROTESTERS DON'T FIND MY HUGE CRIB ON THE WATER).

Margaret & Rev. Don Longbottom (UCC preacher who did the opening prayer for Occupy Darien at Tilley Park): DO pay attention to us! You cannot serve both 'God and money'! At least get your 'agendas' in synch regarding OCCUPY DARIEN. You both try to claim 'authority' as religious figures, legal beagles, whatever...and are falling short. Why is this? What kind of 'nun' are you, Margaret? You are not like any nuns, Buddhist or otherwise, that I know. I should think that fine religious figures such as yourselves would have no problem rallying the masses with a message that is pure of heart and unfettered by human transgression. I used to be in the occupy wall street crowd. But then i saw people who didnt bathe, complained about everything and accomplished nothing. Sure, I could have stayed sponging off society, while exclaiming they paid too little, but I decided to work.
While I was part of the OWS movement, I also lied a lot and said I was a former CEO and thought that portraying anyone with money as being a jerk was believable.
But now that I obtained a brain, and common sense, I realize how idiotic I must have been when I told people about obviously false things to make rich people look like idiots.

... I kind of put that label on the people who order a bottle of wine... you know the ones... after the self-aggrandizing soliloquy which of course has to mention “complexity”, “mid-palate” and “leafiness”. The best part being when the wine snob (isn’t that redundant?) takes the first sip and proceeds to gargle with the vino. ROFL! I’d discipline my 4 year old if she ever tried that trick with her orange juice, yet adults perform this baffling act much to the admiration of the other sommeliers-in-training present at the restaurant “tableaux” .... ooo la la, I feel so superior speaking fake french! Now I understand the allure of being a morally superior wine aficionado and will henceforth feel humiliated and excluded sipping that diet coke!

I think the negative response towards the protesters is poorly thought out on the part of many. These are young people who want nothing more than what we all wanted at their age. This is good. What would you prefer, that they sit on their rumps playing Nintendo all day?

These are young people who are clueless about the real world thanks our wonderful education system and colleges today--of course, parents have a role to play as well. Don't worry --they will be playing PS3 or XBox after this while they sip on the Starbucks lattes and talk on their Android phones or type on their Macs while wearing $100 flip flops.....all things that came from capitalism...not that they would know this.

FormerCEO: You're entertaining, I will say that. And I agree that 'it never works to dismiss the concerns of the incoming generation'. But the OCCUPY WALL STREET & OCCUPY DARIEN movements are being orchestrated & manipulated by the old, dug-in LEFT'--because that is where the 'old, dug-in LEFT' $$$ is. Of course, the RIGHT has the SAME dynamic working for THEM, and is using using their $$$ for their causes in EXACTLY THE SAME WAY! But in the end, 'demonizing' people for what they have or have not done, for how old they are, for how much they may or may not have, gains nothing. Communication and compassion DO, however, and that is the opportunity we have here as we engage in discourse over the OCCUPY movement. Blessings to you- Rev. Barb

FormerCEO... the "negative response" comes from the fact (I believe) that this entire "Occupy" movement is an "us" vs "them" class warfare exhibition. The 99% vs the 1%. Not "constructive" but "destructive". Others have said, and I completely agree, if you really want to create "change", put down your "Eat the Rich" and "We are Many, They are Few" signs and head to Washington, DC. If this movement were about moving toward change, why on God's green earth would anyone "protest" in Darien? They chose Darien because the protesters view Darien residents as "Them". So explain how "this is good" ?

FormerCEO: doesn't matter if you were humble. OWS is not judging individuals; its judging classes of people. In OWS standards YOU are the 1%. If you were so repulsed by what you saw: you should have acted accordingly then. Its a sweet thing to be critical now after you have cashed out.

Actually, I have always been very vocal about the need to be pleasant and compassionate to everyone, both workers and clients. The employees at the company knew I wouldn't tolerate prima donna behavior. I think 99% of them very much appreciated my standards on this issue. A few grumbled. They either quit or were fired. I am not alone with this stance. I see Barclay's CEO has just come out with a "No Jerks Allowed" rule. Good for him. I've spoken to a number of other CEOs over the years. So many feel the same way I do. It's the middle managers where I see the problem. I think the money went to their heads. Maybe that's in fact why they never moved past middle manager. Maybe there is a lesson to be learned there. I'm glad OWS is pushing on this issue, it's a step in the right direction.

It's ironic that we are trying to dig our way out of a major economic hole, largely caused by lax regulations in the financial system, where trillions of wealth was "distributed" to the rich---(from 1979-2005 the average middle class Joe saw a salary increase of 21%, during that same time period, the top 100th of 1 percent of earners had a 480% increase in salary). Of course now we're hearing business leaders complain about too much regulation and taxing the "job creators." What a joke.

I cut my own lawn, rake my own leaves, clean my own gutters, etc. Get a job, go to work. There is plenty out there...is it just "beneath your standards". it breaks my heart to hear young people complaining that they "followed the formula" by going to college and now demand a job. Did anyone ever tell them you have to study something that people want to hire you for? Majoring in English and Political Science are nice hobbies, but not a marketable education. Its like trying to sell comic books outside the Apple store. I learned to read and have an opinion when I was five. I never expected someone to pay me for it. If you've been in the occupy movement since September...that could have been a semester learning something new. Or you could have learned a new language. Instead, you do nothing. I hope the town officials learn and take into account the result of this 2 day "event" which might cost Darien taxpayers upwards of $10,000 for police presence the next time a resident requests to pull a park permit for a gathering. What was the reasoning behind a request for 2 full days and not 1? Was a list of invitees, speakers, newspaper notices or any other form of advertising for the event provided to give a better estimate of the numbers necessary to warrant that much cost? I appreciate the fact that an indvidual has the right to free speech and ability to gather to discuss shared interests yet because in part of the poor organization & followup by it's host/organizer Margaret Rague. Even she had no idea as of 12/20 whether there could be 50 or 5000 attendees therefore the town wisely prepared for the worst case scenario.
In hindsight because of low turnout less than 25 (excluding police & wildlife), IMHO the event would have better served both the attendees and town residents if MRs party was held at the library, school auditorium, her home, etc rather than drain the taxpayer resources further. If an organizier can't provide the basic background information regarding enough event activities for 2 days and firm estimate of anticipated turnout, than they should not be given a permit; @20,000 taxpayers
should not have to eat this cost because of 1 resident's personal interest.

I did finally go to the occupation and Occupied. We ended up in a long idscussion with a teacher, who currently wasn't at school teaching as he had to protest the broken school system which he was a part of. When asked about his thoughts on vouchers? He said that would ruin the current system. We responded that we thought he also thought the current system was broken. He just wants it bigger, we just want it fixed.

Jane, how about keeping this Darien story on the Darien patch. While some stories may have a regional interest which justifies spreading it on more than one Patch site, once the comments get started how about keeping it to the primary city. Afterall, we sign up for a city-specific patch for a reason, rather than a Fairfield Patch. Thanks.

I think DPD acted reasonably. After all, there really was no way of telling that only a handful of people would show up. A real embarrassment for the organizers any way you cut it. Going forward, someone looking for a permit should be required to hire private security, licensed by the State of Connecticut. And be required to post bond to cover any potential damage to town property.

bryan,
I know you are an ex cop or maybe a cop. and therefore feel the need to constantly defend them. thats your choice. But there are similar attacks on the 'rich', attacks on david campbell, neilsen, etc and the only one you think is wrong is pointing out where police have overstepped their bounds.
I know a kid who got arrested for 'talking too loud" a couple weeks ago. The cops didnt like his'attitude.' Ok--well if cops can arrest you for attitude, im thinking that you may have even once seen a cop with an attitude, and im thinking they didnt get arrested.
There was an off duty cop 12ish months ago that ran a stop sign , or a red light on West Ave, causing an accident -and victims were transported by post 53--the cop was given a 'warning.'
You think that sort of stuff is fair? or real? or in your mind is everything that a cop does correct? Im thinking that cops most often get it right. But with all jobs they also get it wrong, and for people on the opposite side of their mistakes, its not a pleasant experience. You might want to defend them, but for people like chris noe, who feel like they have been wronged, they can talk about it.
Police seem to think they own the town or the world --speak against them and they want to arrrest you.
The judge threw out the case agt the kid, both amused at the ridiculousness of the charges, and anger at the cops. It costs the cops 0 and the kid hundreds for a lawyer. Cops deserve some criticism and some praise.

One of my posts was removed by Patch. It seems you can't use an abbreviation that might represent the F-word. I stand corrected. I took down the rest of my posts because the protest is over.
Patch provided an online forum to engage in the protest. I applaud Patch. The comments I made regarding the police were 100% truthful yet still refrained from alarming detail not fit for public broadcast.
This was a forum like no other yet participants try to censure it's content. This defeats the purpose intended by Patch.

Plus--despite the fact that you have 'deleted' whatever you've decided to delete here...anyone who 'subscribes' to the DarienPATCH receives BLOG ARCHIVE UPDATES in e-mail (and saves them if they are noteworthy), so you can never, really completely erase what you've written online by simply 'deleting' your entries at the primary source. EXPORT GOODS & SERVICES NOT JOBS, CONCERNED CITIZEN
Concerns about the future of the US are valid. If the multinationals continue to gut our middle class, the income disparity will increase and we will return to Dickensian poverty. Taxes on the 1% will increase.
Thinking people should be in favor of more international trade to stimulate exports. The US exports 25% of its Chinese imports. We need an enlightened industrial policy using all tools at our disposal to wage economic war internationally through more positive balances of trade. To start, remove barriers to exports which make no sense. If we need collusion and international price fixing, so be it, but those who use these tools domestically should be prosecuted. We want free markets within the US and effective industrial policies internationally.
Until we change the game and think and act out of the box, we will NEVER get the complete support of the American people. The right and left-wing ideologues will joust with their opposite numbers forever. The current political parties can’t agree on the time of day.
Many industry leaders who publically call for free markets don’t mean it. The large banks, especially, want to sing the song of free markets but tap Main Street for bailouts when their risky creations fail. The only way to get sincere business leaders, labor and government to get anything done is to find common ground. It’s time to roll up our sleeves again and get working together.

Margaret Rague is an elitist snob who doesn't have a clue about social issues and why some people do better than others. Ms. Rague, I seriously doubt you have lived in the inner city or worked in the inner city. I have done BOTH, and I will tell you successful people have often sacrificed both time and money to get ahead. They are not "over achievers" but people who MET their potential. I don't begrudge anyone no matter how much money they have what they have earned as long as they earned it legally. It is Liberals like you who over regulate, and then make special deals for deadbeats to which companies must conform, that have gotten us into this mess. Barney Frank and Chris Dodd, human pond scum forced banks to lend to people who did not qualify, that had much to do with the financial pyramid collapse. Additionally, do you have any clue that ordinary people with pensions and 401k's have stocks that are wrapped up in these companies you vilify? If you happen to be a member of the "lucky sperm club" and have family money dear, people like me actually need to have these corporations do well so we can plan for our future. And, as for me, I worked two jobs for ten years to afford my first house, I am a minority, and I don't have an axe to grind against corporations or anyone else. Over the last ten years we've had financial companies selling junk mortgage-backed securities to unsuspecting investors (including state pension funds), and then betting on whether those loans would fail -- and without the capital to cover their own bets. We had S&P rating junk mortgage-backed securities as AAA. We then spent billions bailing out banks.
Tony Imbimbo
Tony, you said a lot there.
Financial companies were selling "junk" mortgage backed securities to unsuspecting investors (including pension funds). Are you saying that, for example, pension funds are unsophisticated investors? Are you saying that these financial companies ALL made money, because they KNEW they were going to fail? What regulations prevent markets from going down? If you sold your house, Tony to someone for 1 mio dollars and 2 years later it is worth 700,000 did you do something wrong? Or is it just when 'financial companies" sell to pension funds that they somehow knew and were in possession of all facts? (If they knew it all, then why did they suffer at all?)
Then your last line, and this is simply analyzing facts. "we spent billions bailing out banks." Can you give me an idea of how much we "spent" on BANKS.
We loaned money to banks---took on assets--and sold at a profit. While it suits your argument to villify a certain class of people, it nevertheless is this generations "BIG LIE."

The federal government has reaped a $10 billion profit on bank loans made under the controversial Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).
The Treasury Department announced Tuesday that the government had pulled in another $1.7 billion in proceeds stemming from TARP loans.
Bank of Montreal had acquired M&I Bank of Milwaukee and, as part of the deal, paid back the purchased bank’s share of TARP funds.
The reviled bailout program had been expected to prove extremely costly to the federal government, but bank assistance under the program has been in the black since March. All told, the government has received about $255 billion from banks under TARP, having lent out just $245 billion.

The problem with using Buffett as an example, is that he then donates his vast fortune to worthy causes. So, if you are trying to study the rich peoples contribution to society and finding it comes up short, he is a bad example of that point.
You would also be wrong to cite buffett as a typical example of total taxes paid. The carried interest rule, I agree is something that should be addressed...but then to extrapolate that rich people are squeezing the middle class by unfair taxes is simple demagoguery and incorrect.
Tony, I know when you think Im wrong, you correct me--(Ive experimented and you always do) yet when I point out that banks actually have not cost taxpayers anything (and in fact pay tons of taxes ) you decide you cannot admit that your argument is flawed.
Dont you think it makes more sense to look at the collective taxes that all "rich" people pay than to discover one man,(buffet) and then use him as an example? The 1% pay 37% of all taxes. The average federal tax rate for the top 1% is 31.1% while the bottom 95% of earners tax rate is 9.3%
31 vs 9 and you are claiming that the rich are paying less of a percentage ?
Tony, if you dont understand math, as you appear to want to convey, how about you suggest to Congress to flip the rates for the 95 vs the 1? Do you really believe it? Or you are fine with just spreading untruths?
Luca Duff Cruz

Last thing.
I agree Mr Buffet didnt pay his fair share.
I agree that anyone that makes in excess of 250k and finds loopholes to pay less than 25% federal taxes, is not paying his fair share.
But the solution is not to place a 5% penalty to increase an already highly progressive tax on the vast vast majority of 'rich' people who already pay a huge chunk of the US tax burden.
Close the loopholes (not the ridiculous private jet tax--that Obama spoke about earlier this year--that I think may have raised around 20 mio dollars? but was just a talking point--to exaggerate the issue (republicans think that people need private jets more than healthcare for handicap children. ---You have to hate that manipulative garbage.)

"we" did not spend billions bailing out banks in the end. We did spend billions bailing out general motors. We are still in the red with aig.
And all your articles that unsuccessfully try to point to a conspiracy are easily dismantled.
What happened 3 years ago was as a result of a credit bubble; over leveraging ; complacency ; arrogance ; bad business habits; corrupt politicians ; greedy people in all vocations; a lack of responsibility. No equity mortgages.
It was borne of the media overstated concept that real estate investments could not go down.
That stocks did not over time , go down. Again ..over leveraging...and a credit induced giant bubble.
S and p were not conspirators in this debacle. They were just another inept institution ensconced in the notion that everything was rosy. That chinese investment would continue ad infinitum .
What the conspiracy theory folks never quite are able to explain is , if country wide and s and p and gold man and bank of America were actually duping all these people, why did they lose more than anyone? That pension managers, such as harvard university, who were smarter than anyone, and showed double digit returns for years, were now victims, yet had profited handsomely for years in the same system.
Bottom line.... None of the articles explain or even try to explain why we should send more money to Washington or Hartford. Or how a dr with 200k in college loans making 265 needs to send more to the IRS .

The solution is to limit govt spending....or we become Greece. The solution is to limit leverage. If younlimit leverage you limit CEO pay. The democrats want more money to spend...so they are fine with high CEO pay...they just want to tax it.
If you limit leverage the stock market comes down. CEOs make the majority of their income on stock and stock options. CEO pay increased dramatically because stocks increased dramatically. Limit stocks..and you limit CEO pay. But also all that tax revenue disappears . And then our deficit grows. It's a conundrum. But rhetoric about evil rich people is just noise. There is no solution...and increasing taxes while allowing high leverage is myopic. Focus on spending not on taxes. Stop the wars. Limit public sector handouts that way outpace private sector. Limit entitlement programs . Government gives away too much because they can't say no to voters. It's a huge problem .

Tony,
Hyperbole, exaggeration and misinformation is not anything that should drive change.
Ive successfully defended the system. Your inability to controvert my points is not insignificant.
We live in a global age. While Obama and Barney Frank make great speeches, predicated on demagogy, they also understand that we desperately need financial service companies to be strong and thriving. After all, Frank, Dodd and Obama were the top money targets of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in 2007, 2008.
We cannot over regulate a business that can easily migrate to different countries. And then we can again miss the mistake made by inviting General Electric to pay their coporate taxes to other countries. And that is the reality that exists. Countries like Luxembourg, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Siingapore, are welcoming with open arms the villanous corporations that exist in your mind---asking them to pay 15-20% tax rather than punishing them with 35% and losing every dollar.
You need to approach the topic with honesty.
Saying things like "it wont cost taxpayers a dime" in order to achieve an agenda--or saying " the rich dont pay their fair share, while paying 60% of all taxes is simply heading for Greece type solutions. Why are we not looking at Greece, France, Iceland and learning from their mistakes. Socialism doesnt work. Regulation works only when it erodes bureacracy, not create more.

Stiglitz is well known for his liberal bent, but even more so for his commentary in the rear view window.
An Academic , he has argued why socialism failed (after it failed -and gave advice , including opening up markets). He was a great advocate of free markets under Clinton, right up until the time that the dot.com bubble burst, and then spoke about market excess and greater regulation. His prescription for dot com bubble was a more involved Federal Reserve. After the crash of 2008, he reversed himself, and called for more regulation --tighter controls, ..and now speaks about social consequences of excess and disequlibirium.
Certainly some of his points are valid. Thats what comes from hindsight--of which is great in using when it comes to applications of economic theory.
There is no doubt that things should change. Things always need to change--but becoming more like Greece, which is what our Democrat friends seem to desire is not going to help anyone.
Pointing out where Enron executives were greedy and ruined things--is great. We know that there are bad people in the world, and that accounting fraud can exist.
But Democrats always point to this sort of incident, and then bizarrely conclude that we need to tax the rich in order to correct the injustices.
Copying and pasting or reviewing economic mistakes --is easy. But there is never a line that leads to greater regulation. Singapore Hong kong---viable countries that have lax regs and low taxes.

This message is for Sexton. First of all, you have engaged in legally actionable slander against me with regard to disparaging my right to use my own name. Damages are legally presumed in cases like this, because you have engaged in slander per se. Second of all, you purport to be a Christian, but in no sense of the word do you live up to such a claim. I have been watching your nastiness for some time now--you feed off derision and hatred and them try to twist it into something akin to decency. jesus Christ came into Nazareth and professed love. Tony,
That is the type of response from a person who has lost the debate.
Im asking you to correct statements that you know to be untrue. Very specific statements. I have asked probably 9 times, but instead of acknowledging the misreprsentation, you focus on if my name is real. How about this, when I get the idea that you are willing to be honest, and admit obvious falsehoods, I will put my real name on this thread, and then we can engage in honest debate. But at this point, you make a lot of demands, yet have yet to embrace the honorable ways you pretend to admire. A real name is not necessary to speak truths. Did you refuse to read Mark Twain?
How many Glenn Beck books have you read? How many Ann Coulter books?
Stiglitz is a respect author (by some). Ann Coulter speaks the truth to other people. The problem with you, it seems, is that the truth is only the truth if it affirms your views. Im not denigrating Stiglitz for his ability to look at what went wrong and then explain it. Im saying he has generally been behind the curve--arguing for free markets, before he for more regulation. He can change his views--but that doesnt make him a 'seer' it makes him a reporter.
Its people like Krugman and Stiglitz that appeal to liberal audiences, when they identify injustice, yet Krugman was an advisor to Enron, took that money freely--as he takes many corporate speaking fees, and then attacks them-to uphold his appeal to the left. You can admire that--I dont.

So much of this is history like the only unsolved murder of a police officer in Connecticut. Who cares. 100K for the arrest & conviction and my credit card will get me a coffee at Starbucks. In New York they name a bridge after cops who skid off the road into a ditch, Bareman got a street in his honor. In 30 years he has become a folklore hero who went down in a blaze of glory shooting at his killer when fact the psychopath who shot him used Bateman's gun and took it as a souvenir As Bateman lay bleeding to death he was taunted by his killer. It's all history and who cares. The cop in charge of the case is the one who dropped my x-girlfriend off down the street. Happy New Year

Reverend Barb, I am fully aware of cyberspace and how it works. Thank-you for your concern to express it further so that all bloggers understand. The topic of this blog is wide open from what I see. Luca and Tony are like two heavy weight boxers who are completely exhausted who continue sparring in the 12th round. Let me leave with a couple quotes from dead celebrities about change.
"I'm starting with the man in the mirror". Michael Jackson
"I fear less a biker with an attitude then a yuppie with an agenda". Andy Rooney

Chris--I admire someone like you who is not afraid to take a stance and is passionate and consistent about it. But you must also be wise about sharing certain things in an open forum! On this particular blog, sensitivities are 'high' for all of us, considering we are just recovering : ) from 'the holidays'...and are entering into the guts of the election season. Actually, I'm 'learning' from Luca & Tony (no financial expert, I) and they are a 'valuable read' as this OCCUPY DARIEN/STAMFORD/WALL STREET, etc movement unfolds. I just urge all to be careful with emotions high. My version of Michael Jackson's quote is, "I don't know how to fix the world...but let's you and I start with ____ (this)... okay?" Rev. Barb

Reverend Barb, OK
Luca, I have enjoyed the banter between you and Tony..
I am a builder (Home Improvement Contractor according to my CT license) If I need a buildng permit for a job I have no control of my business what-so-ever and it continues to get worse. The people at "Choose to Reuse", who wanted to ban plastic bags, are to be feared more than Hells Angels according to Andy Rooney.
