Nonprofit: Darien Wealthiest Town in Fairfield County

Darien edged out New Canaan with a median household income of $185,619, according to the Connecticut Economic Resource Center.

Darien’s household earnings were the highest in Fairfield County and twice the county median in 2010, according to recent research.

In its town profiles, updated this month, the Connecticut Economic Resource Center reported income figures for Fairfield County’s 23 towns. The data set lists Darien's median household income as $185,619.

New Canaan comes in a close second at $180,434, followed by Weston, Wilton, and Westport. Bridgeport sits at the bottom of the list with $36,250.

For the previous year (2009), the survey listed the median household income in Darien as $187,581, putting it second on the list behind Weston.

"Household" is a term preferred by economists to describe people living in the same residence. "Median" is a way of measuring typical amounts of a group by listing all the numbers in a data set and picking the middle number.

The same data set lists the median household income at $65,686 for the state and $77,620 for Fairfield County.
