$19.5K in Jewelry Missing After Teen Drinking Party

Another Darien mother and father leave their teenage son at home; another underage drinking party takes place; predictably, the party gets out of control.

Darien Parents, do you know where your teenage son or daughter was on Friday, Aug. 10?

Not only did a large number of Darien teenagers converge on a drinking party on Brookside Road on Aug. 10-11, while a 17-year-old boy's parents were away, but $19,500 in jewelry was missing, police said.

That amount of jewelry has a higher value than bank robbers often get, although it would have to be fenced or otherwise sold in order to get part of the value in cash.

said that when they arrived at the party, one intoxicated teenager was woken from a stupor on a couch and began vomiting uncontrollably. Post 53-Darien EMS took him to Stamford Hospital.

A Darien police spokesman did not know how long the boy was treated in the hospital for acute intoxication before he was released.

Police gave this account of the incident:

At about 12:19 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11, an officer on patrol saw two teenagers carrying a 30-pack of beer. They had just come from the party.

Arriving at the house, officers saw a can of Bud Light on the front porch and several empty 30-packs of Coors Light Beer in the house.

Numerous teenagers were found in an upstairs bedroom or in the basement. Also in the basement were empty cups, liquor bottles and remnants of a beer pong game that had been set up on a ping pong table.

According to a police statement, the 17-year-old host "indicated that he had planned on having a small party consisting of 20 to 25 people, but it got out of control." He said the party began at 9 p.m. on Friday.

Police could not immediately contact the boy's parents, who were out of state, so police made arrangements with a family friend they deemed to be a responsible adult to supervise the boy until his parents' return.

When the parents did get back home, the mother found someone had stolen jewelry from her jewelry box in the master bedroom. Stolen were:

  • A ladies watch with diamonds valued at $6,500
  • A ladies yellow gold watch, $5,000
  • A man’s Movado watch, $5,000
  • A pair of gold men’s cuff links, $1,000
  • A pair of men’s onyx cuff links, $2,000

On Thursday, Aug. 16, the 17-year-old host of the party was charged with serving alcohol to minors and is to appear Aug. 21 in Stamford Juvenile Court.
