Letter: Selectmen Nielsen, Campbell Endorse Terrie Wood

Selectmen David Campbell and Jerry Nielsen endorse Terrie Wood for re-election to her seat in the state House of Representatives; and Rowayton resident Gil Kernan also writes a letter supporting Wood.

To the editor: Terrie Wood's four years as Darien’s state representative has unquestionably proven she is the right person for the job.  As selectmen, we consistently admire how she works with us and understands the issues facing our town and our state. Terrie works tirelessly as an advocate for Darien while looking out for the future of Connecticut.  She has built strong bi-partisan relationships with her fellow representatives and has gained their respect and admiration. As local business owners we know she is looking out for us.  Terrie is fair, rational and is good at building consensus.  She is working hard at working with the Legislature to making our state a more attractive place to do business.  Terrie understands how important it …

Candidate Lee Whitnum Leaves Democratic Party

US Senate hopeful and Greenwich resident says she is severing ties with the party because Gov. Dannel Malloy and Rep. Chris Murphy are "lying to the people to pander to the ultra conservative branch of the Jewish community."

U.S. Senate hopeful and Greenwich author Lee Whitnum announced today that she is leaving the Connecticut Democratic Party but will continue to run for retiring Sen. Joe Lieberman's seat in the upcoming November election on a yet-to-be determined ticket. In an emailed statement, Whitnum said she was severing ties with the party because Democrats Gov. Dannel Malloy and U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy are "lying to the people to pander to the ultra conservative branch of the Jewish community." "I've had enough, I'm leaving the Connecticut Democratic Party," Whitnum said. "I can't be in a party where the two of the highest representative in the party namely Governor Malloy and Congressman Murphy lie to the people about the real reason why we went to …

Norwalk Board of Ed Chair to Run Against Bob Duff

Chiaramonte told The Hour of Norwalk what prompted him to run was when he witnessed Duff "walk in and walk out of" an important committee meeting on education reform up in Hartford.

Asserting that state Sen. Bob Duff is doing a poor job of representing the district and is out of touch with his constituency, Jack Chiaramonte, Republican chairman of the Norwalk Board of Education, has reportedly announced his intention to run against the four-term incumbent this fall. Chiaramonte, whose term on the Norwalk Board of Education expires November 2015, told The Hour of Norwalk that Sen. Duff's recent votes in support of abolition of the death penalty, same-day voter registration, and decreasing the penalty for marijuana "are not issues people in Norwalk agree with him on, but he represents us." Chiaramonte, a longtime resident and owner of SoNo Silver Company, said what prompted him to run was when he witnessed Duff "walk in…

Conservative Activist James O'Keefe Skypes NH Gala, Avoids Arrest [VIDEO]

Conservative activist James O'Keefe, a protege of the late Andrew Breitbart, said his attorney advised against appearing in person at a New Hampshire GOP gala Sunday due to possible law enforcement against him.

Conservative activist James O'Keefe spoke to a packed house of Seacoast Republicans Sunday not in person, but rather on streaming video because stepping foot in New Hampshire would trigger a criminal grand jury subpoena. O'Keefe has drawn strong praise and criticism from his investigation into voter fraud during the New Hampshire primary. O'Keefe, 27, had filmed inside a polling station in order to show how easy it is to commit voter fraud. He often cited frustration Sunday during a Rye Republican Town Committee-hosted gala about being stopped from doing his job and trying to uncover "truths" about a flawed system he said is necessitating a voter identification bill. "I think it's unfortunate that we live in a country these days where …

State Rep. Terrie Wood to Run For Third Term

Wood, who serves as a ranking member of the General Assembly's Select Committee on Children, as well as on the Appropriations Committee, Human Services Committee and Domestic Violence Task Force, ran unopposed in the last two elections.

State Rep. Terrie Wood (R-Darien/Norwalk) has announced that she will run for a third term serving the recently-redrawn 141st District, which now includes less of Darien and more of Norwalk. Wood, who serves as a ranking member of the General Assembly's Select Committee on Children, as well as on the Appropriations Committee, Human Services Committee and Domestic Violence Task Force, ran unopposed in the last two elections. The Darien Times reports that the Darien Democratic Town Committee is interviewing potential candidates to run against Wood in the November election. A resident of Darien for 33 years, and previously a resident of Rowayton for four years, Wood has been involved in both communities in a range of capacities, having served…

Redistricting May Have Changed Your District, Polling Spot

In this year's regular redistricting, some of Darien's six districts (1,3 and 5) have changed a lot, another (6) a little, and two more (2 and 4) hardly at all (although their polling places have changed).

Darien's first test drive of its new voting districts takes place today, when Republicans in town are entitled to vote in the presidential primary, and a lot of voters may be showing up at the wrong polling place. The primary, which is only open to Republicans, starts at 6 a.m. and ends at 8 p.m. Have some identification handy (a photo I.D. is best), but if you don't have it, you can sign a document, swear you are who you say you are, and then vote. GOP voters can choose between Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul (all still officially in the race), along with Rick Santorum and Uncommitted. You can figure out whether or not you live in a new voting district by looking at the attached document, which breaks down each street's voter …

Bishops: Don't Make Catholic Hospitals Perform Abortions [UPDATE]

When asked during a debate Sunday if they would support, as a concept, a federal law requiring Catholic hospitals to perform abortions, some Democratic Senate candidates indicated they would. The bishops object.

Editor's note: This article was extensively updated at 6:51 p.m.: On Sunday, some Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate said they'd favor the concept of a federal law requiring even Catholic hospitals to perform abortions. Now, the state's Catholic bishops are objecting. Connecticut's Catholic bishops—including Bishop William Lori, who announced in March that he is leaving the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport to become archbishop of the Baltimore Archdiocese—have issued a statement expressing their dismay after all five Democratic candidates said during Sunday's "Face the State" debate that they would support legislation forcing Catholic hospitals to perform abortions. "If it is their [the candidates'] position that our hospitals …

Hospitals are public institutions whether affiliated by religion or not. I think the bigger question is whether a hospital can refuse a patient's treatment based on religion. In many communities, hospitals some with religious affiliations is the only choice of medical facilities and all doctors within that community are affiliated with that institution. Whether by fortune or misfortune, you must …   more ›

We Haven’t Really Come a Long Way, Baby

The current ‘war between women’ pitting Hilary Rosen against Ann Romney is deflecting attention from the true ‘war ON women’ and distracting us from the real question—Who are we voting for?

[Editor's Note: Please keep an eye out later this week for "Patch Back," a new feature from Lisa Bigelow that will serve as response piece to certain installments of Heather's "Patch In."] The question isn’t whether Ann Romney ever ‘worked’ a day in her whole life, but: Does her husband Mitt truly give a rat’s ass about anyone—especially women—in the 99 percent? This made-up battle between working moms and stay-at-home-moms is causing people of every gender to lose focus on more important issues—namely whether politicians are advocating stripping rights from women (like reproductive health choices) or finding ways to penalize them and hold them back (withholding equal pay) or simply having a double standard when it comes to lower- vs. …

Poll: McMahon Leads Shays, Who Does Better vs. Dems

A Quinnipiac poll breaks down the U.S. Senate race and Republican presidential primary.

A Quinnipiac University poll shows Linda McMahon leads former U.S. Rep Christopher Shays by a 51-42 margin, but falters against Democrats compared to her opponent. In the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, U.S. Rep. Christopher Murphy, who represents the Fifth District, leads with 37 of the vote, followed by former Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz with 25 percent and State Rep. William Tong with 4 percent. Polling results for possible November match-ups: “Congressman Christopher Shays has narrowed the gap with Linda McMahon from 15 points to 9 points.  The question is whether he can catch up by primary day, August 14,” said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz. “In general election matchups, Shays runs neck and neck with…

Any Republican candidate has an uphill battle in Connecticut. Almost every person I have talked to has the same opinion of Linda McMahon as they did the last time when she lost by a big margin. Interesting that she has a long list of endorsements from elected Republicans which tells me, if these polls are right, that these Republicans including our own Jayme Stevenson must be mesmerized by her …   more ›
