Cooperative Nursery School Plans 48th Art Show

The Community Cooperative Nursery School (CCNS) announces its 48^th Annual Art Show will be held Thursday-Sunday, June 10-13.

"The show is attracting professional artists and art buyers from all over the Northeast," organizers said, "and will include outstanding works by established and emerging artists."

This year's featured artist is Eline de Jonge; her Shadows and Light Grand Central, a 48-inch x 48-inch oil on canvas, will be on display.

The French Salon-style show offers one of the biggest and most diverse selections of original art for sale in Fairfield County, bringing in close to two hundred thousand dollars in sales over a four day period, the school reported.

The CCNS will once again convert the "little red schoolhouse in Rowayton" at 4 Trolley Place into a professional art gallery, where over 70 new and returning artists will be represented.

Hours are: Thursday, 7-10pm; Friday, 6-10pm; Saturday, 12-6pm; and Sunday, 12-4.

The art show committee is made up entirely of parent volunteers, who collect, hang and entertain art patrons "with this labor of love that begins each school year," according to the school's website.

Beth Israel of Westport/Norwalk, 40 King Street welcomes the Community to an evening of elegant dining at the family friendly Passover ‘First Seder’ to be held Monday evening, March 29 at 7:00 p.m. and the ‘Second Seder’ to be held Tuesday, March 30 at 8:00 p.m. The cost is $55.00 for each Seder meal and $25.00 per child under 15. The four-course sumptuous and elegant dinner is served on table linens, with hand-baked Matzah. The menu includes an entree of salmon & gefilte fish, salads, chicken soup & crepes, with a main course of roasted pullet, zucchini potato kugel & veggies, followed by tantalizing desserts. Darien Library's Spring Book Discussion Series Continues

The Spring Book Discussion Series, "Dysfunction Junction: The Lives of Others," continues at the Darien Library on Tuesday, March 30 at 7 p.m.

The books selected for discussion are compelling, discussion-worthy true stories of people who have not only lived through unimaginable circumstances, but have written brilliantly about their experiences.

The Bolter by Frances Osbourne is the discussion book for March 30. Library staff members will lead the discussion (the Library has copies of the books available for patrons to borrow, but prior reading of the books is not necessary to attend the discussions).

The Bolter is the biography of Lady Idina Sackville, one of the most scandalous Britons of the post-World War I era. Though not considered a particular beauty, Sackville charmed men and women alike, and made a habit of marrying whenever she fell in love. Written by her great-granddaughter, through the use of family stories, diary entries, and never-before-seen letters, the book chronicles the story of this most intriguing woman of old British money and title, a woman who leaves her husband and children for a romantic, albeit epically dysfunctional life, taking her from flapper girl in London to adventure in Kenya.

This is the second discussion book of the series.

“Wartime Kiss” at Darien Library: A Guest Lecture by Dr. Alexander Nemerov of Yale University

On Sunday, March 28 at 3 p.m., Darien Library will present "Wartime Kiss: Forgetting the Second World War," a special program about American Art in the 30s, presented by Dr. Alexander Nemerov of Yale University. This is a One Book, One Community* event.

The Second World War accelerated the worldwide recovery from the Great Depression of the 1930s, bringing about an extraordinary time period for American art. What was the visual culture of the American home front during that period, and how do we remember WWII today? The question seems strange, since WWII is vastly remembered in books and movies, maybe never more so than now. But the recollection of that time is also fading away, just like the memories of the Great Depression. What, then, is a memory of the war now?

Dr. Alexander Nemerov, chair of the History of Art Department at Yale University, will look to the films and photographs on the home front to ponder what, if anything, still resonates from the war years. Dr. Nemerov is also the author of "Icons of Grief: Val Lewton's Home Front Pictures" and curator of the forthcoming Smithsonian Exhibition, "To Make A World: George Ault and 1940s America."

*One Book, One Community encourages everyone in town to read the same book and then come together to explore its themes.

The selected book for the town-wide read is "The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl" by Timothy Egan, the 2006 National Book Award Winner for Non-Fiction.

The selected book for younger readers is "Out of the Dust" by Karen Hesse, the 1998 Winner of the Newbery Medal.

Each book is set during the 1930s and centers around the experiences of those who survived the Great Depression during one of the worst natural disasters of all time.

This program is co-sponsored by the Yale Club of Lower Fairfield County. Yale Clubs, run by volunteers within local communities, offer Yale University alumni a wide variety of activities, services, and opportunities for lifelong learning while reflecting Yale's core values of education, community, and service. Model Matzah Bakery

Make your own matzah and learn the beautiful tradition of making Shmura Matzah at our community-wide Model Matzah Bakery.

In the Model Matzah Bakery, children learn how Shmurah Matzah is made - literally from "scratch". Dressed in baker's hats, children start from threshing and winnowing natural wheat stalks, separating the wheat from the chaff. They crush the wheat, separate whole grains from chaff, collect the accumulated wheat grain into rustic hand-driven millstones. In an exciting competition, the children grind the wheat grain into flour. The resulting whole flour is sifted and separated. Then the childrenwill mix the flour and water into Matzah dough, knead, roll and make holes in the the dough. The matzot are then rushed to the "brick" oven in the hope of baking the entire batch of Matzot in just 18 minutes.

Each child will not only take home their own handmade matzah, but also an individually boxed, full-sized, delicious Shmura Matzah that is Kosher LePesach. The boxes will also include the Four Questions (also transliterated) as well as a Pesach Guide.
