Sing, Sew, Bid, Listen, Read — 5 Ways to Live a Little Better Here

What to know and where to go in and around Darien for Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013:

  • Author Lee Child came out with his latest book in the Jack Reacher series, "Never Go Back," on Monday. Fans know Reacher as the hulking, brainy ex-military police officer who travels the country, righting wrongs and owning nothing much beyond his foldable toothbrush. He (Child, that is -- not Reacher) was at the Darien Library in 2010 and you can watch the 57-minute video here. Barrett's Bookstore has the book.
  • Darien Library has just announced two one-session crafting programs (to register, follow the links): "Needle and Thread" from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 22 ("At this inter-generational crafting program, enjoy tea and cookies while learning the art of needlework!") and "Learn to Hand Sew" from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16.
  • David Walker, former United States comptroller general "will talk about the state of the nation’s and Connecticut’s finances" at the next meeting of the Darien Men's Association, starting at 10 a.m. Thursday. The association announced on the Darien Community Association website. "According to Walker, the Government is too big as it is 24% of the economy, moving toward 37 percent. Hear all his suggestions at this event, the first DMA event of the season." For more information on the event, which starts at
  • Yoga Warriors Week, to support U.S. troops in Afghanistan, starts Thursday with a silent auction at Elements Yoga at the Noroton Heights Shopping Center on Heights Road. "Everyone is welcome to bid on a variety of prizes, including private yoga classes with Elements’ exceptional yoga instructors, massages with Elements’ talented massage therapists and body workers, gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses, and gift baskets compiled by local markets. There will be a variety of sweet goodies to bid on." -- from the event listing on Darien Patch
  • "The Norwalk Community Chorale invites you to join our 70-member four-part chorus on Tuesday, Sept. 10 [...] There are no tryouts or residency requirements. Our Chorale is made up of local community people who share a love of music and singing! New members are welcome—especially tenors and basses! We rehearse on Tuesdays, 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. [...]" -- from the event listing on Darien Patch
