Read to a Dog, Use a 3-D Printer, Visit a Caribbean Market

There are all sorts of things to consider doing in and around Darien -- here's five:

  • If your child is learning to read, reading to a dog may help -- at least it will be fun. On Tuesday, Sept. 3, from 4 to 4:45 p.m., "Reading Education Assistance Dogs will visit the Children's Library to encourage beginning readers and promote literacy," according to an announcement on the Darien Library website. "Register for a 15 minute reading session with a certified therapy dog. Readers ages 5 and up." -- for links on how to register, see the announcement
  • Darien Library has a program for children in Grades 3 to 6 who will be able to use computers, software and a 3-D printer to make things. The "TEA Room" (TEA stands for technology, engineering and the arts) classes will run held every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon from 4:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., according to the announcement on the Darien Library website. You can register your child for it starting Tuesday, Sept. 3.
  • Looking for something different? An "authentic Caribbean Market" can be found at 724 S. Pacific St. in the South End of Stamford from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. on Friday. This event listing on Stamford Patch has a bit more information. The South End has recently seen a transformation, with the recent construction of many large, new apartment towers, the introduction of new stores (including a Fairway supermarket), restaurants and office buildings.
  • "The Darien Board of Education requests that any special education parent who has an interest in serving on the Search Committee for the Independent Person to Oversee Special Education in the Darien Public Schools during the 2013 – 2014 School Year to please send an email to boemail@darienps.org .  Please include any pertinent information that you would like to share to help guide us in our parent selection process.  This should include the grade and school of your student(s), or if your student is out placed.  We will leave the email available until next Tuesday, Sept. 3." -- from an announcement on the Darien Public Schools website
