Kids Under 10 Eat Free at Chuck's, Sunday to Thursday

What to ponder and where to go yonder, in and around Darien today.

Here are five things to know if you're in Darien or not to far from it on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013 :

  • Did you know that Thursday, Aug. 29, is Startup Across America Day 2013? U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy was scheduled to meet Wednesday in East Hartford with entrepreneurs who started businesses. In a news release, Murphy's office says, "Startups have proven to be a driver of economic growth in the United States, creating approximately 3 million jobs each year."
  • Know a doctor or dentist who would be interested in this? From an announcement by AmeriCares: "The Bob Macauley AmeriCares Free Clinic of Norwalk is seeking physicians, nurse practitioners and nurses to volunteer on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The clinic, located at 98 South Main Street, provides high-quality primary care services to low-income area residents without health insurance. Volunteers typically work one four-hour session a month. Medical malpractice insurance is provided. Volunteers must be licensed in the state of Connecticut.   • The Darien Nature Center reopens Tuesday, Sept. 3. The Chipmunks Vacation program runs Tuesday through Friday (Sept. 3-6), Fall enrichment classes begin Monday, Sept. 9, and after-school classes start on Sept. 16. Fall registration is already in full swing, according to an announcement posted on Darien Patch.
  • From an announcement from Chabad of New Canaan: "Chabad of New Canaan will be running High Holiday services for the New Canaan Jewish Community. The services will be held at the New Canaan Nature Center. The services are open to all. There is no charge to join the service and no membership necessary. [...] Rosh Hashanah Evening services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 4 and 5 at 7 p.m. Morning services will be held on Sept. 5 and 6 beginning at 9 a.m. During morning services, both days, the Shofar will be sounded at 11:30 a.m. Yom Kippur services begin on Sept. 13 at 7:00 p.m., and on Sept. 14  at 9 a.m. For more information, including the full schedule of services, visit www.chabadnewcanaan.org (Meanwhile, The Congregation for Humanistic Judaism (CHJ) will hold its annual High Holiday services at The Unitarian Church in Westport, 10 Lyons Plains Rd. -- see the announcement on Darien Patch for details.)
