Nicholas Roberts is a favorite local spot in Darien, where the knowledge and expertise received helps you choose the perfect wine every time. Whether you are new to the world of wines, or a collector expanding your cellar, Peter Troilo and his staff can help educate you on choosing right wine for every occasion.  

Peter Troilo, (featured in the video) is the Managing Director of Nicholas Roberts Fine Wines. Peter hand picks and makes all the purchasing decisions for the store. When asked to name his favorite wine, (a question I’m sure every one of his customers asks) he smiled and said “it’s like stating which child you love the most, you just can’t do it.” So he gave us an array of regions that he enjoys, “wine from Rhone, Cornas, and specifically Saint Joseph.”

Nicholas Roberts is most known around Darien for their “Friday Night Wine Downs”. Every Friday for the last four years, free of charge, this event has featured four of their hand-picked beverages, ranging from red wine to white wine, sparkling to champagne. If you are a twitter follower of @NRWine, you can get a sneak peek of what will be served this Friday. While there you can also inquire about their monthly wine club entitled “The Wine Experience”, considered the biggest independently operated wine club in the state.

“If you are wondering where the name ‘Nicholas Roberts’ came from”, Peter stated,” it’s a combination of my father’s name “Nicholas Troilo” and my brother’s name “Robert Troilo”. He laughed when he stated about how many times he has gotten calls asking for the “Nicholas Roberts”. Peter’s brother, Robert Troilo, is the Executive Chef and Managing Director of Nicholas Roberts Fine Foods, located in Norwalk, Connecticut. This extension of the Nicholas Roberts brand holds true the company’s motto, “Enriching Lives through Food and Wine”.

Of course, with the approaching holidays, we were curious about what the holiday trends were this season? Peter’s answer was that Grower Champagne and Spirits, St. George Spirits gin in particular, have brought the cocktail culture back to the community. In fact, in spirit of this holiday trend, Nicholas Roberts on Sunday, December 16th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm would be hosting a Grower Champagne Tasting. The event will be a causal get together with champagne available to take home that day or order for the holidays.

I’m happy to say that we all left Nicholas Roberts with a better grasp of the concept of wine, a bottle in hand, and an understanding of why Nicholas Roberts is the biggest independently operated wine club in the state.
