Thank You, Veterans

I am pleased that Darien Schools have wonderful Veterans Day celebrations.

Today I had both the privilege and the pleasure of attending s Veterans Day Celebration. Veterans and active servicemen from World War II, the gulf wars, the War in Afghanistan, and War in Iraq spoke to a captivated group of eight graders about their many heroic adventures in battle. They told the students about the battleships and submarines they manned, the bomber planes they flew, and the many different types of equipment and weaponry they used.   What impressed me most, however, was the deep love and commitment each veteran has for our country and how strongly they feel the need to serve to protect it.

Whether it was the bombing of Pearl Harbor or the attack on the World Trade Centers, the veterans told of a pivotal moment in their lives when they realized that they wanted to enlist in the military to protect our country. Having fought in wars overseas or been stationed in foreign lands, they spoke of how lucky we are as Americans to enjoy the freedoms, luxuries, and opportunities that living in the United States provides. The Veterans implored the MMS 8th graders to never take for granted all the benefits and advantages we have because we live in the U.S. and asked them do their part to volunteer in their communities. Their words inspired the group of students, their teachers, and myself to be proud to be Americans, to remember that we are one united nation, to treasure all the liberties we enjoy as Americans, and to be truly thankful for all the courageous, patriotic men and women who serve or have served in the United States military.

I believe this is perhaps one of the most important lessons that any child could learn at school. I am extremely pleased that our make the time and effort to put on such educational and inspirational Veteran's Day Celebrations. I look forward to my children coming home from school today so we can discuss how truly blessed we all are to be Americans.
