Middlesex' Geography Bee Championship

Middlesex Middle School held its annual Geography Bee championship consisting of 10 finalist.   This year's competition was unique in that the last two contenders were both 6th graders and had to battle it out through multiple sudden death tie breaker rounds.   Racing to be crowned a champion before the end of the school day bell sounded, John Phipps ultimately answered one last question correctly to win over Riya Krishnan.  8th grader Julia Tong came in 3rd place in their year's Bee.

Thousands of schools participate nationwide each year in the geography competition which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.  The competition is open to fourth through eighth graders and is designed to generate interest in and public awareness of geography.

The MMS finalists pictured here (from left) with Michael Borecki (three time MMS winner and this year guest judge) and Barbara Ivey (Darien Schools' Geography Bee Coordinator) are Will Daniel (8th gr), 3rd place finisher Julia Tong (8th gr), Forrest Lassara (8th gr), Winner John Phipps (6th gr), Eddie Glassmeyer (8th gr), 2nd place finisher Riya Krishnan (6th gr), Addie Schoen (8th gr), Eliza Koorbusch (6th gr), Nick Cardone (8th gr), and Jackson Leone (6th gr).
