Middlesex Quiz Bowl Strong Performance

The Middlesex Middle School Quiz Bowl Team recently traveled to Hackensack, NJ to take part in the 3rd annual Bergen Academies Junior Academic Competition.  The tournament field was comprised of 28 of the best teams from New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and four teams from Middlesex.

While all four of the MMS teams did very well at the competition, two teams, the Black team and the Blue team, made the playoffs, .  The Black team finished an impressive 11th overall.  The team consisted of 7th graders Megan Cunningham, Greyson Etheridge, Charlotte Juan, Griffin Samroengraja, and Alexander van Dijkum, and 6th grader Jackson Leone.  The MMS Blue team went a perfect 5 - 0 in preliminary play, but lost to the eventual champions in the semi-finals and walked away with a very impressive 4th place finish.  The Blue team was lead by our captain, 8th grader Julia Tong, and featured 8th grader Casey Martin, 7th graders Thomas Brown, Folke Bruno, and Evan Tong, and 6th grader John Phipps.

The other two MMS teams, the Silver Team and the White team, fell one victory shy of making the playoffs.  MMS' Silver Team members included 8th Grader Brett Peters  and  7th graders Marshall Bessey, Kieran Daly, Ria Dhull, Willem Scheddeboom, and Olivia Yoo.  The White Team finished 3 - 2, and featured 7th graders Catherine Garrett, Caroline Orphanos, Shashank Sangaru, and 6th graders Nick Derby, Shriya Desai, and Maya Nalwade.

Of special note, three of the top ten overall individual scorers were from Middlesex.  Julia Tong was 1st, Griffin Samroengraja was 4th, and Willem Scheddeboom was the 7th overall scorer.
