Babe Ruth President Doug Webster Steps Down

Editor's note: Chris Mangan, who posted this announcement, is vice president of Darien Babe Ruth Baseball.

Darien Babe Ruth Baseball, Inc. has announced that its President, Doug Webster, will step down at the end of the 2012 season, having served as President for the past 5 years.  Mr. Webster passes the gavel to Robert Maley, currently a vice president of Darien Babe Ruth and co-commissioner of Darien–New Canaan American Legion Baseball.

Doug Webster has been a fixture within Darien Youth Baseball for almost two decades, having previously served on the executive board of Darien Little League for 11 years, including 8 years as President.

His 3 sons, Kyle, Cameron and Kincade have graduated from youth baseball, but all played in Little League and Babe Ruth programs and later served in their father’s footsteps as volunteers in various capacities. Doug’s devoted wife, Karen, will no doubt be glad to have her husband returned to her after his many years of unselfish service.

Five years ago, Doug Webster led a reorganization of Darien Babe Ruth, which has led to the successful installation of a Travel program at three age levels (13-15), the reinvigoration of Senior Babe Ruth Baseball (16-18) and an upgrade in the House program, which now fields 11 teams in two divisions in the Fairfield Junior Babe Ruth Association.

Among other notable achievements during Doug’s tenure, Darien Babe Ruth re-established itself as the primary baseball feeder program to Baseball.

“Doug dedicated as much time and hard work to the program after his three sons graduated as when they were in the program," said League Vice President Mitch Ross, a league vice president, recounting Doug’s many years of service to the Darien Youth Baseball community. "His devotion was pure, and not predicated on whether his own sons would directly benefit.”

Doug always worked to make sure that the last boy picked in the draft had as good an experience as the first boy.
