GOP Seeks Candidates for Town Positions

The Darien Republican Town Committee is accepting applications from candidates for two openings on the Board of Education, for a Republican Registrar of Voters and Justices of the Peace.

The RTC will endorse candidates for the three positions at its May 23 caucus as well as appoint 10 justices of the peace.

The BOE’s responsibilities include setting goals and standards for the Darien public school system, assessing progress towards these goals, establishing and monitoring annual budgets, overseeing curriculum development, and acting as the liaison between the school system and the general public.

Ideal candidates will be knowledgeable about issues facing Darien schools and have strong communication and interpersonal skills.

The Registrar of Voter’s responsibilities include maintaining voter registration records, remaining current on state election laws and hiring and training election poll moderators and other workers.  In addition to knowledge of the above, ideal candidates should be database savvy and capable of formulating and dispensing information.

The Registrar of Voters is a part-time paid position that typically works weekday mornings and full days during election periods.

Justices of the Peace abide by a code of ethics and are authorized to take depositions, issue subpoenas, administer oaths or affirmations and take acknowledgements / declarations.  Connecticut Justices of the Peace can also perform marriages anywhere in the state of Connecticut.

Those interested in any of the above positions should complete and send the application found on the RTC website (www.darienrtc.com) to RTC Chairman Bob Bewkes at info@darienrtc.com no later than May 2 and ideally be available to meet with the RTC at their monthly meeting May 9 at 7:30 at the Darien Town Hall.

The Republican Caucus will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday May 23, at the Darien Town Hall Auditorium (please bring proper ID).

Pursuant to Section 3 of Article II of the Rules of the Republican Party of the Town of Darien, other candidates who plan to seek endorsement at the May 23 Caucus may be nominated by petition by submitting to the RTC Chairman or Secretary not less than five (5) days prior to the date set for the Caucus, a declaration of candidacy.

The declaration shall include the candidate's name as it appears on the Town of Darien's list of registered voters, the title of the office being sought, and the signatures of twenty-five (25) registered Republican electors of Darien.

There shall be no nominations from the floor of the Caucus.

Such petitions must be submitted on or before Thursday, May 17, 2012, to Darien RTC Chair Bob Bewkes, One Wheat Lane, or to Secretary Laurie Williamson, 2 Tinywood Road.
