Don Smith, the Republican Registrar of Voters is retiring after dedicating an impressive 22 years of service to Darien.
During his tenure, Don and his colleagues oversaw significant improvements to the voting process including new voting machines and various voter registration drives especially those targeting younger voters.
To occupy is new-found spare time, Don plans on continuing his work with therapy dogs as the area representative for Pet Partners, the largest international organization involved with the training and placement of these inspiring animals.
Don works with 60 of these amazing dogs spending over 2600 hours in area hospitals. He has also been visiting area schools for the last several years with “reading educational assist dogs” that have helped younger children raise their level of reading competency.
Last week, Bob Bewkes, Darien's Republican Town Committee chairman, presented Don with a check made out to the Westport Animal Shelter Advocacy as a small token of appreciation from the RTC for his years of dedicated service to the town.
On behalf of the entire Republican Town Committee, and likely a grateful electorate, a heartfelt thank you Don, for your years of service. Congratulations on your retirement and best wishes as you continue serving the community in such a profound manner.
