In the annual homecoming game against rival New Canaan, the Darien High School Blue Wave freshmen soccer team stormed over New Canaan on Friday, with a 3-0 win over the Rams.
Encouraged by a strong turn-out of cheering freshmen Wave supporters, within the first five minutes of the game, Sam McMullin shot off a nice pass to Granit Hotti, who opened the scoring for the Wave with a clean, strong shot on the net. In goal for Darien, Matt Meyjes consistently prevented New Canaan from scoring in the first half, with several great saves. Darien was in the lead at the half, 1-0.
Towards the middle of the second half, captain Nate Mayerhoeffer helped the Wave resume their scoring with a cross to Riley Stewart who headed the ball into the net, for a 2-0 lead. Within the final five minutes of the game, captain Ben Bidell found captain Tim Lyons for another clean pass to AJ Scolaro who rounded out the scoring for the Wave, 3-0.
The Darien High School freshmen boys soccer team are 5-3-3 this season, and play their final game at home on Monday (4pm at Middlesex Middle School) against Norwalk.
