DAC Stage to Hold Auditions for Spring Play

Darien Arts Center Stage, darienarts.org, is holding auditions for its upcoming play, “Sirens” by Deborah Zoe Laufer. The production, which will be directed by Carin Zakes, will take place in the Weatherstone Studio, the DAC’s black box theater. Auditions will be held on January 7 and 8, 2014 from 7 to 9pm in the DAC’s Visual Arts Studio at 2 Renshaw Road in Darien.  Callbacks, if required, will be held on January 9th at 7 pm.

This delightful new play was a hit at the 2010 Humana Festival of New American Plays, as it explores the poignancy of a once passionate relationship that has lost its sizzle. When main character Sam fell in love with his wife Rose, he wrote her a song that has been covered by every recording artist and translated to every language. For twenty-five years, Sam has been looking for the creative spark that this first flush of love had inspired in him – but to no avail. While on a cruise to celebrate the anniversary of their marriage, Sam hears the most sublime music ever heard, jumps overboard, and winds up with a siren. There on her island he must struggle with the terrors of middle age, the tortures of creative failure, and the desire to live in his past rather than face his uncertain future. He must find a way to get home and win his wife back. More information about the play can be found at http://www.samuelfrench.com/p/2254/sirens.

Roles to be cast consist of: Rose, in her 40s or 50s and married to Sam for 25 years; Sam, in his 40s or 50s (married to Rose for 25 years); the “Siren”, in her 20s, who also plays a waitress and a travel agent and is a contemporary version of a mythical siren; and Richard, a man in his 20s who will play a man in his 40s to 50s. Richard was Rose’s handsome high-school-crush-turned-sleazy guy-on-the make. During the audition, candidates will be asked to read scenes from the play. Sides will be provided.
