Darien Little League's Opening Day

Darien celebrated Little League Baseball’s 75th anniversary and the start of Darien Little Leagues’ 63rd season with a fun-filled afternoon at McGuane Park on Sunday.

Hundreds of Little League baseball, softball and challenger players marched from Darien High School to McGuane, where DLL President Hutch Pegler led the annual Opening Day ceremony.

Middlesex Middle School 7th grader and DLL softball player Sarah Longo kicked off the festivities by singing a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem.

State Representative Terrie Wood and First Selectman Jayme Stevenson as well as members of the DHS Baseball and Softball teams were on hand to offer words of encouragement to the players and their families.

Challenger players then led the crowd in the Little League Pledge.  Brian Cashman, General Manager of the New York Yankees (and Darien Little League parent) was the special guest speaker and threw out the first pitch.

Mr. Cashman generously stayed on the field to sign autographs and take pictures in front of the Yankees’ 2009 World Series trophy with each and every autograph seeker.
