Darien Y Holding Bike Camp for Special Needs

The Darien YMCA will be holding a five –day camp to teach individuals with disabilities to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle. This program called iCan Bike will be held April 14th – 18th at Middlesex Middle School and requires riders to attend only one 75 minute session a day. The program will be taught by iCan Shine.  Applications are available on the Darien YMCA website, www.darien-ymca.org, under Special Needs.

iCan Shine is a non-profit organization that collaborates with local organizations to host camps in their communities. iCan Shine uses adapted equipment, trained professionals and volunteers. With 75 minutes of instruction over five days, over 80% of riders learn to ride a conventional bicycle independently by the end of camp.

To be eligible to enroll, riders must be at least eight years old, have a diagnosed disability, and be able to walk without an assistive device such as a walker or cane. Riders must be able to side-step quickly to both sides. Riders must have a minimum inseam measurement of 20 inches, and weigh no more than 220 pounds.

The cost of camp is $150. An application must be completed and delivered with payment enclosed to the Darien YMCA Front Desk at 2420 Post Road, Darien.  You will be contacted by email to confirm your child is eligible to attend camp.
