Darien YMCA Competes at Connecticut Senior Long Course Championship

The Piranha Swim Team at the Darien YMCA competed in the Connecticut Senior Long Course Championship this past weekend of July 12th at Wesleyan University in Middletown.  Overall, the Piranhas finished 12th as a Team and 8th on the girl’s side.

‘Seniors’ is the fastest meet offered in Connecticut.  The swimmers swim preliminaries (trials) in the morning and the top 24 come back at night to swim in finals.  The summer meet is conducted in Long Course Meters, the Olympic distance.

The Piranhas sent 20 swimmers to the meet led by Duke University-bound Eliza Bragg and Lehigh University Sophomore Jake Greene.  Bragg placed in all but one of her events (100 back 8th, 200 back 6th, 200 IM 11th, 400 IM 8th, 100 fly 11th) and Greene placed in all 6 of his events (200 20th, 400 13th, 800 10th, 1500 free 7th, 200 6th, 400 IM 12th), both posted great times as they get ready for Sectionals in Buffalo in early August.  New Team records were established by Michelle Wall in the 15-18 yr old girl’s 100 Breaststroke (finishing 8th) and Phoebe Slaughter in the 13/14 yr old girl’s 100 Backstroke (finishing 5th). Slaughter also finished 12th in the 200 backstroke and 24th in 400 IM.  Other finalist included Lia Barsanti (100 22nd, 200 breaststroke 23rd), Amanda Bieler (400 17th, 1500 freestyle 13th), Natalie Grune (100 butterfly 16th), Steven Grune (50 6th, 100 freestyle 18th), Caroline Orem (100 16th, 200 backstroke 22nd).

Next up for the Team are Regional, Age Groups and Sectional Championships.  To learn more about the Darien YMCA Piranha program visit the Darien YMCA website at www.darien-ymca.org.
