The Darien High School boys freshmen soccer team played in Ram country against New Canaan on Friday afternoon. The Rams not only led the offensive charge at the outset, but dominated the first half, scoring 2-0, despite strong defensive efforts of Ben Hayes, Alex Cohen, and Matt Meyjes in goal for Darien.
New Canaan emerged from half-time, still charged from the first half lead, securing another goal in net and with it, a 3-0 lead over Darien.
However, Wave coach Brandon Neike's half-time morale boost settled in on his players, and the tide started to change for Darien. Determined to come back from the deficit, freshman captain Ben Bidell led the charge for the Wave on a corner kick, headed into the net by a New Canaan player. Darien was on the score board, 3-1. Bidell persisted offensively in the second half, finding and then setting up a pass to freshman captain Tim Lyons for a net shot, the score 3-2. Dillon Jones, in goal for the Wave during the second half, kept the Rams at bay. Riley Stewart, who has scored in every game this season for the Blue Wave, stayed true to his streak, with a drive up the midfield and nailed a direct shot into the net, tying the game for Darien, 3-3.
The freshmen Wave are now 4-2-2 this season, and are scheduled to play next on Tuesday (tomorrow) against Westport Staples at Wakeman Park.
