The Greenwich High School girls varsity water polo team recently did their part in fighting cancer – the teens raised $500 for the upcoming Greenwich/Stamford Swim Across America event.
Their coach, Bill Harris, asked the girls to donate to charity in lieu of a coach’s gift. To honor Bill – and also the mother of a teammate who was diagnosed with cancer – the girls ran a bake sale.
Swim Across America funds raised this year will go directly to the Stamford-based Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT), which supports breakthrough cancer research around the globe.

Founded in 1987 by Connecticut residents Matt Vossler and Jeff Keith, Swim Across America is now the nation’s largest national non-profit that battles cancer through swimming. Its events – which include 18 open water swims and hundreds of pool swims annually – have raised over $55 million to combat cancer.
