Singles sailing club to host open house, seeks new members

WESTBROOK – The active sailing season is here, and those interested in the sport can meet other enthusiasts by joining the Shoreline Sailing Club. Meetings of the club, geared for singles age 35 and older, are held year-round on the first and third Thursdays of each month starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Westbrook Elks Lodge. Club members enjoy daytime as well as sunset sails on Long Island Sound, which occur on Friday nights. Weekend destinations include Block Island. Other water sports members engage in include kayaking, motor boating and fishing. The club has 300 members from around the state, but only about 50 members have boats. “You don’t have to own a boat to join,” said member Janina Cummings of Simsbury, who serves on the publicity committee. “Other club members can help the captains during the sails.” Boating novices are welcome to join, she said, and are encouraged to learn from the experienced skippers. “For those who love the water, the club offers a way to meet many people who have that in common,” she said. “We encourage singles who want to take part in sailing to join our club,” said Commodore Norbert Church, a New Haven attorney. “Sailing is great for people looking to de-stress on weekends – it’s how I unwind,” said Cummings, the owner of Shear Artistry Day Spa & Salon in Avon. The club also offers a variety of social and recreational activities such as trips, dances, hiking, theater events, dinners, brunches and an annual outing for newcomers. Members pay annual dues plus event fees, and the guest fee for attending a meeting is $10. A free Open House will be held Thursday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Westbrook Elks Lodge with light bites and a cash bar available. Those who join the club that night can sign up to attend the next big event, the Commodore’s Gala, scheduled for Saturday, May 11 aboard Mystique, a vessel with Lady Katharine Cruises at Eagle Landing State Park, Haddam. Boarding is at 6:30 p.m. and passengers return by 11 p.m. The gala includes dinner and dancing to the music of The Wango Tango Band. Club members pay $49 and $54 for their guests. Registration, dinner choice and payment are required by May 2. For more information, visit www.shorelinesailingclub.com.
