Senator Carlo Leone Participates
Darien, CT, November 8, 2013. In recognition of Veterans Day, fourth- and fifth-grade students at Hindley Elementary School today honored veterans of all ages who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Sponsored by Cablevision Power to Learn, the HISTORY “Take A Veteran to School” event is focused on helping students better appreciate the sacrifices made by our nation’s service men and women, as well as their families. “Take A Veteran to School” is a national initiative by HISTORY that connects veterans from all walks of life with students and communities nationwide. Darien’s State Senator Carlo Leone, Chairman of the General Assembly’s Veteran Affairs Committee, participated in the event.
After the Veterans “Honor Walk” and opening remarks from Principal Rita Ferri, Senator Leone led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance and spoke to the students about the importance of honoring veterans. Cablevision Area Director of Government Affairs Michael Chowaniec then discussed the “Take A Veteran to School” partnership with HISTORY and presented Darien VFW Commander Phil Craft with a $2500 contribution. Participating students received HISTORY bracelets and pins.

“America’s veterans embody the ideals upon which our country was founded,” said Senator Leone. “Events such as the one today give young people the opportunity to show these heroes just how much we deeply appreciate the many sacrifices they have made and thank them for their dedicated and loyal service. I commend Cablevision and HISTORY for this important program that connects young people with veterans from all walks of life.”
Cablevision’s Vice President of Public Affairs Jennifer Ostrager noted, “The veterans we honor today are true heroes in every sense. Cablevision’s Power to Learn is dedicated to providing schools like Hindley Elementary School with programs that recognize the many contributions that our veterans have made.”
