Summer Safety Tips From Two Darien EMS-Post 53 Members

Summer 2013 is finally here! As the town jumps into the usual summer habits, it is important to remember the simple safety precautions that can be taken. As members of Post 53 and lifeguards, we constantly see accidents and injuries happening. As EMTs and lifeguards it is our job to try and prevent these incidents, but you can avoid injuries just as easy. The following steps are recommendations that will make summer nuisances easily avoidable and will  (hopefully) evaporate any problems that could arise during the day.

1.  Be careful in the summer heat! Remember hydration is key to avoiding heat exhaustion and fainting.

2.  Although driving with the windows open and music blasting can be fun, make sure to stay aware of your surroundings to avoid collisions.

3.  Pool safety is crucial. Rough housing or horseplay may cause unexpected injuries from a seemingly innocent game.

4.  Know your limits.  If you’re swimming in the Sound or any open water, stay close to shore unless you’re an experienced swimmer, and always follow lifeguard instructions.

5.  As much as we enjoy it, the sun can cause serious damage to skin. Always remember to apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going out into the sun and apply it while inside or in the shade.

6.  Summertime brings out the bicycles and roller blades. Make sure to protect yourself by wearing helmets and other pads, while maintaining safe road habits to avoid falls or other trauma.

7.  Hot things look like cold things! Always be aware around barbecue grills, making sure you don’t touch them while they are on or cooling down.

8.  Although sparklers can be great summer fun, remember you’re waving a flaming stick!  Be careful.  You want to avoid sparks flying into someone’s face or accidentally poking them in the eye.

We hope these tips are helpful and you keep them in the back of your head while you’re enjoying summer.

Sincerely,

Emma Byrne and Mira Venkat
