The Blue Wave Freshmen Boys Soccer team eeked by Wilton on home turf Tuesday afternoon with a 3-2 win over the Warriors. Freshman captain Nate Mayerhoeffer led the charge for the Wave with a nice set up, passing to Riley Stewart for a deflected shot off the Wilton goalie … and Sam McMullin was at the net to tap it in for the Wave's first goal. The Warriors were on the attack and quickly responded with a goal of their own. Despite some solid footwork, strong kicks and goalie magic on both sides, the score remained tied, 1-1 at half-time.
At the start of the second half, the Darien team received some unexpected help from the Wilton team, when a Warrior mistakenly shot on his own goal, putting Darien in the lead, 2-1. Wilton eventually recovered from the mix-up and responded with a goal of their own, tying up the score once again, 2-2. Riley Stewart sealed the deal for the Wave with a beauteous goal into the upper right net, bringing the final score to 3-2 for Darien.
Matt Meyjes made some fine saves in goal for the Wave, supported by the defending line of Alex Cohen, Ben Sylvester and Keenan Warble.
The Darien Freshmen Boys Soccer team are 4-2-1 in the season, and play against New Canaan, in New Canaan, this (Friday) afternoon.
