Winter Storm Pax #1

For Immediate Release 7:30 am

Winter Storm Pax is here and predictions indicate that Darien should be prepared for 6-12” of total snow accumulation possible by mid-day Friday.  Heavy snow is expected this morning changing to a mix by mid-afternoon.  Precipitation will change back to snow before ending sometime on Friday.  This storm will bring wind gusts of up to 40 mph causing drifting snow and the possibility of downed tree limbs and utility lines.  Temperatures will be hovering right around freezing so as precipitation mixes with rain or freezing rain, roadways may be very dangerous.

Darien Public Schools and the Darien Town Hall will be closed today.

Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads if possible for their own safety and to let our plows work efficiently.  The duration and intensity of this storm will require us to work continuously to open and widen the roads.  Plowed snow on top of existing snow may make visibility around and over snow piles challenging particularly at intersections and in parking lots.  Drive with extreme caution and watch for pedestrians who may be walking in roadways.

Businesses and homeowners with sidewalks may have snow repeatedly pushed onto sidewalks throughout the storm.  Clearing sidewalks in a timely manner is critical for pedestrian safety.  Plows cannot avoid pushing snow onto sidewalks.  Please be careful shoveling heavy, wet snow.

Residents are asked to help clear snow from fire hydrants to assist our fire fighters save time in case of fire emergency.

We continue to monitor the impacts of this storm and have all public works and emergency personnel ready to respond.

Please use 911 only for emergencies.  For all routine public safety inquiries call 203-662-5300.

First Selectman, Town of Darien
