Five Things to Know About Darien: April 27

Patch's daily rundown of local events and useful information.

1. The Darien Department of Public Works continues its Bulk Pick Up through June 21. Enter a Q-Alert request by clicking here to arrange for pick up. Each residence is restricted to a single pickup per calendar year. Pickup Items are limited to those too large for transport by a passenger car or SUV. Residents should have their debris placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on the day of their scheduled pickup. No pickups will be made at addresses on private streets.

2.  Stop by the Darien Sport Shop for a , which begins Wednesday. All those who purchase tickets will receive a 15 percent off discount on all of their purchases throughout the entire store during this event. All proceeds will go to the Wilton Y's Annual Appeal. For information, email cindyerickson@wiltonymca.org.

3. Love to talk books? Visit the Darien Library between 11 a.m. and noon to chat with staff members during this weekly . Talk about what you've been reading, and hear some favorite picks from the staff, which will be on display near the Welcome Desk.

4. The Masonic Club of Darien, 354 Post Rd., will hold a on fraud prevention at 7:15 p.m. Det. William Maloney of the Norwalk Police Department will present a talk on fraud prevention. If you are interested in finding out about the latest scams and areas of vulnerability for fraud, stop by the Masonic Club for an evening of vital information. The Masonic Club will hold a brief meeting prior to the talk at 6:30 p.m. This free presentation is open to the public. 

5. The , 30 Edgerton St., will offer a family course on Alzheimer's from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  The Family Training Seminar will communication techniques, identification of behavioral challenges, and maintaining a safe and secure environment. To register, call the Alzheimer's Association at (800) 272-3900.
