Heavy rain has triggered the issuance of a "Flash Flood Watch" by the National Weather Service for southern Connecticut and the New York metropolitan region.

The watch is in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13.

"Low pressure moving northeast from the mid-Atlantic region and its associated warm front will act on an increasingly moist and unstable air mass to produce showers and thunderstorms today," the weather service said in the warning statement, issued at 4:08 a.m. "Widespread rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely, with localized amounts of over three inches possible in the heaviest cells.

"This rainfall could occur over a short period of time, with rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour and cause flash flooding of small streams and urban low-lying and poor drainage areas," the announcement continued.

Here's the weather service's Darien-specific forecast, updated at 9:56 a.m.:

  • Tuesday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before 5pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. High near 75. South wind around 6 mph becoming east in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
  • Tuesday night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 9pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 60. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.
  • Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 76. Northwest wind 13 to 16 mph.
