Letter: Thank You, YMCA, Posties for Hands For Life

Cindy Kocsis Brown of Darien thanks the organizers of the recent Hands for Life event in which more than 900 people were given a 15-minute course on how to handle a cardiac arrest.

To the editor:

Every moment counts, especially in case of an emergency.

I have always learned  and felt that it is important for people to have a general sense of First Aid as a life skill. With this awareness, I have spread the word to others.

Most recently, I had my mature 4th grade Junior Girl Scout Troop attend The Hands  For Life event on Sunday September 29 hosted graciously by The YMCA and Post 53.  This event taught the public an abbreviated version of CPR,  Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

The Post 53 volunteers educated people easy to remember basic tools  in case of an emergency: Check Call, and Compress; as well as, how to use an AED, an Automated External Defibrillator.

Kudos to Bridget Hannigan and Caroline Nelson, two amazing Posties that had organized this extremely well planned event. Their confidence, commitment, dedication, and leadership skills were perfect examples to the girl scouts that anything is possible - including saving a life.

Extra thanks to Posties,  Madeline Dostal and Caroline Pik, who have additionally, felt  being advocates is important. Including to passing the word along, they had volunteered to teach the girls at Post 53, the requirements needed to earn their Junior First Aid badge.

Much thanks and gratitude to Post 53 for having well trained people on their team. The Posties at The Y event and at Post 53 ,  were professional, well spoken, articulate and were very patient and kind. They were truly fine examples to my scouts.

I have over 40 years (yes) of learning and teaching  health and I  would be confident in each and every Postie.  We should all be most grateful and proud to have such superior community resources such as Post 53 and the YMCA at our doorstep.

Thanks to the YMCA,  Post 53, and to the 1000 people that had attended this terrific community project, Hands For Life. Each person will easily make a difference in family, friends or a strangers life for attending this event, caring, and knowing how to lift the phone and make a Call, Check to see if the environment is safe,  or to save someone's life in case of an emergency.  We all know - every moment counts.

Sincerely,

Cindy Kocsis Brown
