Maplewood at Darien Opens a Garden

Maplewood at Darien, a 66-unit assisted living residence for the elderly, has opened a large, park-like garden in the rear of the building for the use of its residents.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Wednesday in the garden, which is named after George Goreham, who in the 1700s bought the mill on what is now known as Goreham's Pond. The mill, which burned down in 1822, is now depicted on the town seal.

Gregory Smith, chief executive officer for Maplewood Senior Living, spoke during the opening ceremony (see the attached video), and Selectman John Lundeen spoke briefly about George Gorham and the Gorham family.

The residence is located where Mediplex of Darien once stood, at 599 Post Road, the corner of Post and Brookside roads. The garden faces Brookside Road, separated from it by a fence.

Maplewood Senior Living, based in Westport, owns senior living residences in  Norwalk, Danbury, Orange and Newtown.
