Weekend Calendar, Aug. 26-28: Shrek, Sales, and South African Tunes

A roundup of some of the best events across the area.

Don't let Hurricane Irene put a damper on your weekend (though do be sure to check for weather-related cancellations):

  • Where: , 31 Cascade Rd., Stamford
  • When: Friday, August 26 and Saturday, August 27 from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm
  • Why go: Visit Stamford's biggest annual flea market to find great deals on everything from home furnishings to clothing. And if you're in the market for even more of a bargain - all goods are half-off after 2:00 pm on Saturday. At 3:00 pm on Saturday, you can take whatever is left for free.
  • Price: Free, though it's $15 if you want a sneak peek of the merchandise on Friday morning.

  • When: Friday, August 26 and Saturday August 27 at 8:00 pm; Sunday, August 28 at 2:30 pm
  • Why go: See a staged reading of this love story that chronicles a date between an aging short order cook and a waitress at a greasy spoon.
  • Price: $5. Members attend for free. 

  • Where: , 2701 Summer St., Stamford
  • When: Saturday, August 27 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
  • Why go: Are you harboring a secret comic book obsession? A closet full or mint condition Spider-Mans? Then stop by ComicCONN. Meet creators, actors, writers, even wrestlers and join discussions on everything from Star Wars to Indiana Jones.
  • Price: $10. Kids 10 and under are free.

  • Where: , Calf Pasture Beach Rd., Norwalk
  • When: Saturday, August 27 at 6:30 pm
  • Why go: Watch pirates sing, dance and joke on stage in this goofy children's play that combines comedy and action. Bring a picnic and comfortable seating.  
  • Price: Free

  • Where: Levitt Pavilion, 40 Jesup Rd., Westport
  • When: Saturday, August 27 at 8:00 pm
  • Why go: This South African trio has been playing together since they were teenagers, and that's reflected in their smooth and easy sound. The band lists Oasis, U2 and Nirvana among its influences, but their songs have a unique and multi-layered sound.
