Don't Miss Darien's 2nd Community Spelling Bee

How do you spell "community spirit?" Find out at this year's Darien Community Spelling Bee Sunday, March 21, at 3 p.m. in the Darien Town Hall Auditorium. The spelling challenge is open to all residents in middle school and up.

On the heels of last year's inaugural event, this community-wide test of s-k-i-l-l will raise money for The Depot Teen Center and ensure its doors remain open for area teens.

The spelling bee is organized into teams, each with three members. Teams compete in rounds, with the winning team of each round participating in the championship round. Trophies will be presented to the winning team and a plaque acknowledging their 2010 achievement will hang in The Depot for years to come.

To participate, each team must remit a tax-deductible entry fee of $150. Teams may choose to creatively fund the entry fee.  For example, college alums might collect donations from fellow alums who do not wish to spell, but want to show support for their school's team.

Last year's teams hailed from the local police department and Post 53, as well as competing doctors, students' moms, honor society kids, Theater 308, and more. Teams even made t-shirts and wore their uniforms to show unity as they took to the stage before a crowd of spectators.

Anyone who is not a proficient speller but would like to still participate can sponsor a team or make a donation in addition to attending the spelling bee.

Entry forms can be obtained at The Depot.

Chairs for Darien's Community Spelling Bee are  Cyndy Ashburne, Kim Kernan and Andrea McDonald.
