Farm 2010

FARM, a juried art exhibition featuring works in all media by 108 area artists is on view through Dec. 12 at the Carriage Barn Arts Center in Waveny Park.

A free, public reception will take place Sunday, Nov. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m.

The Carriage Barn is filled with a rich variety of farms near and far, together with an artful herd of goats, cows, sheep and piglets — and a farmer or two — portrayed in a wide array of media and styles that celebrate the tradition of farming.

More than 100 artists from across Connecticut and New York are featured in this new, juried exhibition on view through Dec. 12. On display "salon style" are bucolic views of idealized farms around the world, including notable local barns, sweeping Midwestern wheat fields, patchwork French lavender vistas, and rural scenes in South Asia portrayed in etchings, collage, pastel, oil and watercolor.

Farm animals abound in paintings, drawings, photographs and whimsical sculptural depictions.

Exquisite landscape, still life, and portrait photography captures the beauty and the reality of farming today with a bittersweet sense of a disappearing way of life.

Several artists also share their compelling stories of their own farm experiences, adding an important personal connection to agriculture.

One artist, David Brown of Old Saybrook, is also a full time farmer, providing locally grown organic produce and flowers at his Hay House Farm and various farmers markets in his area.

A free, public reception will be held Sunday, Nov. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. Many of the artists will be present. Most of the work in the show is available for purchase.

A map of some of the many Connecticut farms you can visit will be available, together with other information from the state's Department of Agriculture. The non-profit organization, Connecticut Farmland Trust, will provide information on their farm preservation efforts.

The Carriage Barn Arts Center is a non-profit, member-supported community cultural organization founded in 1977. Exhibitions, lectures, classes, concerts and other events sponsored by the parent organization the New Canaan Society for the Arts are held in the restored 19th Century stone barn on the grounds of a former estate — once a large, working farm itself — and now a pastoral town park.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 12 to 4 and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5. The gallery will be closed on Thanksgiving Day but open its usual hours over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The Carriage Barn Arts Center is located in Waveny Park, off South Ave. (Rte. 124), 1/4 mile north of Merritt Parkway Exit 37.
