A roundup of local events and activities for the weekend ahead.

Looking to have some fun outside this weekend? Here are some picks for the best events in and around Darien.

Madcap Mabel: A Staged Reading and Film

  • Where: , 2 Renshaw Rd., Darien
  • When: Friday, May 20 and Saturday, May 21 at 8 p.m.; Sunday, May 22 at 2 p.m.
  • Why go: Watch a biopic and live reading about 'Madcap Mabel,' a silent film star who appeared in over 200 films in the '30s. On the side, she partook in more than her share of parties, finding herself involved in a number of scandals and even a murder case. Afterwards, get your questions answered and have a chance to meet the cast. 
  • Price: $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $5 for children under 12

  • Where: , 10 Nearwater Ln., Darien
  • When: Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Rain date is Sunday, May 22)
  • Why go: Ride a real fire truck, try on the garb, and nosh on free food at Fun with Firefighter's Day. Firefighters will be on hand to demonstrate how to put out house fires and offer other safety tips. As an added benefit, proceeds will benefit Darien's firehouses. 
  • Price: $20 for adults, $10 for kids

 

  • Where: , 261 Main St., Stamford 
  • When: Friday, May 20
  • Why go: Wander around downtown Stamford to the sound of music as 12 bands compete for a spot at Alive @ Five.
  • Price: Free

  • Where: Contestants will start at their houses (clues will be emailed in advance). Afterward, there will be a picnic at 333 Ludlow St., Stamford
  • When: Saturday, May 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Why go: Team up with your family and your dog for a Fairfield County-wide scavenger hunt. Afterwards, head to the park for a picnic and awards ceremony.
  • Price: $25 per family; buy your tickets in advance here

 What's Cooking In Bridgeport

  • Where: Downtown Cabaret Theatre, 263 Golden Hill St., Bridgeport
  • When: Sunday, May 22 at 12 p.m.
  • Why go: It's the last weekend to enjoy Bridgeport's festival of food. To celebrate, there will be a free showing of Goldie Locks. For a complete schedule of which restaurants are participating, click here
