Bite-Sized Politics: Candidates on Party Lines

In this series, First Selectman candidates tell us where they stand on the issue, in a few easy-to-digest sentences.

THE ISSUE:

There are fundamental differences among political parties on a National level, but party distinctions become less clear locally. Furthermore, party affiliation among voters has no direct affect on the outcome of an election; so while Darien is often considered a “Republican town” with the majority of its voters registered Republicans, Democrats or Independent candidates can (per example: First Selectman Evonne Klein) win the majority vote.

As of Oct. 20, 2009, the breakdown of registered voters in Darien by party affiliation:

  • Democrats: 2440
  • Republicans: 6188
  • Unaffiliated: 3965
  • Other: 13

CANDIDATES ON PARTY LINES and WHY YOUR VOTE COUNTS:

Sullivan (D)

It is not about party, but policy. David Bayne and I have experience crafting the right policies for Darien. We will not be “learning on the job.” Darien is a town—not a business, not a country club.

We don’t talk about Party. We talk about people, and how our policies affect their quality of life. We are servants of the people of Darien, whichever party they belong to. Since over 30% are unaffiliated with a political party, this is particularly important.

Noe (I)

My party is different in that I have no agenda. I look at the issues, do my homework, consult the experts and decide what is right for Darien. There is no party influence whatsoever.

It is your right as a US citizen to vote. Your vote counts. You should participate with due diligence and understand who the candidates are and what they believe.  You need to decide who will best represent you.  Who has shown commitment and experience, do they have any experience in town government.  The job requires 80 to 90 hours a week.  Look closely at the candidates for this level of commitment.

Campbell (R)

Republicans have been the party of fiscal responsibility—even when it wasn’t fashionable!

Uncertain economic times demand sound leadership.  I believe my business skills and track record of getting things done with the bottom line in mind will help me be the kind of First Selectman Darien expects and deserves.
