Cops: Drunk Driver Hits 2 Stone Walls, Telephone Pole with Children in Car

A 43-year-old Darien man faces a slew of charges ranging from driving under the influence to risk of injury to a minor after he allegedly drove his SUV into two stone walls, a mail box and a light pole—all while his two children were in the car.

According to Det. Mark Cappelli, police received a call on June 29 at approximately 4:31 p.m. from a witness who claimed to have just seen a Chevy Suburban turn a corner at a high rate of speed and strike a stone wall out front of the United Methodist Church on Middlesex Road. When the caller turned around to follow the vehicle, Cappelli said they believed the car also struck a mailbox and telephone pole before driving off the roadway and striking a second stone wall.

Officers responding to the call from the Noroton area discovered a suburban at a rest with heavy front end damage, deployed airbags and rear tires shredded completely off the rim, Cappelli said, as if the vehicle had been traveling on flat tires down the roadway some distance. Cappelli estimate the vehicle had traveled in it's destroyed state under the control of the driver between a quarter and half-mile before coming to a complete stop.

Police approached the vehicle and detected the odor of alcohol, Cappelli said. They also discovered two children, ages 6 and 7, unharmed in the rear of the vehicle. The driver, identified as Corey Davis, 43, of 74 Salisbury Road, allegedly failed field sobriety tests.

Davis' wife came to pick up her children and the suspect was taken into custody.

Davis was charged with driving under the influence, evading responsibility, two counts of risk of injury to a minor and failure to drive right. He posted a $5,000 bond via a bail bondsman. He was scheduled to appear in court this week.
