Feb. 12-13: Cabaret, Romantic Notions, and a Craft Fair

Patch rounds up some local events and activities for the weekend ahead.

The work week is winding down. What, no weekend plans yet? Not a problem. Patch has lined up 5 of the best bets  to catch your fancy in and around town:

When: Friday, 7:30-9:30 p.m.

Why go: It's quality PG entertainment. The film stars Diane Lane as the real-life Penny Chenery Tweedy, who's determination helped pave the way for her stallion to earn The Triple Crown in 1973. Also starring are Scott Glenn and James Cromwell. Refreshments will be served.

2. Silvermine Arts Jazz Brunch, Book Signing

Where: Silvermine Guild Art Center

When: Sunday 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Why go: The art center hosts the Jazz Brunch with a set menu relete with unlimited mimosas. As a solo performer, Rob Silvan will entertain guests with romantically-inclined songs ranging from jazz to popular music. Reservations are required. After brunch check out the book signing with J Henry Fair from 1-3. The renowned photographer will sign copies of his first book, “The Day After Tomorrow: Images of our Earth in Crisis.”

3. Waiting in the Wings Cabaret

Where: Westport Woman’s Club

When: Saturday, 5 and 8 p.m.

Why go: This debut of the club’s series delivers “Love’s Funny: An Evening of Sweet and Silly Love Songs,” a showcase of New York’s promising stage-bound talent – comedians, musicians and actors – so that you can become acquainted with tomorrow’s stars in this inviting cabaret setting.

Price: $40 for patrons, $25 general. Patron tickets include a complimentary glass of wine/beverage and Munson’s truffles. For tickets click here or call Westport Woman’s Club at 203-227-4240.  This fundraiser will benefit the club’s charitable efforts on behalf of Westport and surrounding communities.

4. Romantic Notions

Where: Darien Arts Center  

When: Saturday, 8 p.m.

Why go: New York cabaret star Miles Phillips comes to town to star in “Romantic Notions,” a one-night-only concert celebrating “Date Night” in honor of Valentine’s Day. For the full write-up click here

Price: $30, $25/full-time students

5. St. Luke's Craft Fair to Benefit China Care

Where: St. Luke's School, New Canaan

When: Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Why go: To browse the wares of more than 50 local crafters and artisans, all to support special needs orphans and youth through China Care’s humanitarian services. All ages are welcome; a kids zone will be onsite. For more information contact the school at 203-227-3655. The snow date if Feb. 18.
