Five Darien Nonprofits That Make a Difference

The Kiwanis Club, Darien Book Aid, and the Junior League are among the picks.

In this week's edition of Patch Picks, we round up five great nonprofits from across Darien. (Consider it a small snapshot of the good work performed around town, as there are many other valuable civic and charitable organizations not listed here.) For those interested in making a donation or getting involved, follow the links to each group's website.

Kiwanis Club of Darien: The Kiwanis Club of Darien is one part of Kiwanis International, a global, volunteer-run organization dedicated to “changing the world, one community and one child at a time.” The local chapter’s volunteers work on a number of community projects to serve Darien's children and teens.

Darien Book Aid Plan: Darien Book Aid is a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization that aims to build “a foundation of peace, understanding, and friendship” by distributing free books. Book Aid sends books in response to requests from Peace Corps volunteers, libraries, and schools worldwide.

The Stamford-Norwalk chapter, which is headquartered in Darien, contributes hours of service and thousands of dollars to community projects each year. To date, the group’s diaper co-op has distributed more than 270,000 diapers to low-income Fairfield County families.

Darien YMCA: This nonprofit community service organization is focused on promoting health and wellness among families and children in the community through camps, classes, and events. Volunteers assist with YMCA programs, special events and everyday activities to serve the organization’s mission.

A Better Chance: ABC, a national nonprofit, summarizes its mission as providing four year scholarships "to highly motivated and academically promising, female, minority students from inner city areas who desire better educational opportunities and broadening life experiences." Six students are enrolled in Darien's chapter at any given time, attending and living together at 11 Brookside Rd.
