Five Things to Know About Darien: Feb. 9

A Budget (Mais Pas de Budget): The Board of Education for 2011-12 on Tuesday night following a monthlong budget process. That's a 6.38 percent increase over current levels, but it's down from Superintendent Stephen Falcone's original $77.2 million proposal, which was criticized as being too high by members of the Board of Finance and RTM Finance Committee. One item left on the cutting room floor: foreign language instructors for the town's five elementary schools. The budget now heads to the finance board.

Kaboom!: A proposal to bring Fourth of July fireworks back to Darien , as developer David Genovese and P&Z Member Susan Cameron presented their plan to the Board of Selectmen. The project will be privately funded and use a low-impact launching system, the pair told the selectmen. Police estimate that more than 4,000 people would likely attend.

Riveting Rosies Screening: The Darien Library will be screening the documentary Top Secret Rosies at 2 p.m. today . The film looks at a U.S. program from WWII in which female mathematicians were recruited to perform computations and create ballistics tables for every weapon in the military's arsenel.

Parent Conference Schedule Change: With seemingly more snow days than schools days as of late, Darien Public Schools administrators . Conferences will now be held on Monday, Mar. 14, Tuesday, Mar. 15, and Wednesday, Mar. 16. The town's elementary schools will dismiss students early on those dates, while Mar. 7, 8, and 9 will now be full days of school.

Music Honor Society Concert: The TRI-M Music Honor Society Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Darien High School Band Room. DHS students will perform a variety of music, including jazz and classical. Refreshments will be provided.
