Five Things to Know About Darien: Jan. 18

  • Wintry Mix: With a mix of snow and ice already on the ground and more still falling, Darien Public Schools have elected to close for the day. The precipitation is expected to switch over to rain after 9 a.m. as highs push toward 37°, according to the National Weather Service. Metro-North .
  • Hoyt Street Hearing: At 8 p.m. in the  audtiorium, the Planning & Zoning Commission resumes a public hearing on the Hoyt Street Senior Residences, a controversial affordable housing project proposed by developers Chris and Margaret Stefanoni. This is the third and possibly final portion of the hearing.
  • Get Organized: Looking for tips on how to organize your closet, desk, or calendar? There's a free panel presentation at 7 p.m. in the Darien Library  on the subject.
  • BOE Budget Meeting: At 7 p.m., the Board of Education will meet to discuss several areas of the forthcoming 2011-2012 public school budget, including art, library/media, technology, health, elementary schools, administration, personnel, curriculum, and finance.
  • Shovel Those Sidewalks: Don't forget about the ordinance requiring Darien property owners to clear their sidewalks with in 24 hours of of a snowfall (Sec. 66-5[a]): "The owners of all properties abutting upon sidewalks in the town are required to clear such sidewalks, as their property may abut upon, of snow and ice, within 24 hours after snow or ice shall have formed or have been deposited upon the abutting sidewalk. A person who violates this section is subject to a fine for each offense and the amount of such fine as listed on Appendix D, Table of Ordinance Fines. Each such violation shall be a separate and distinct offense, and each day that such violation continues uncorrected shall be deemed a separate and distinct offense and shall be subject to a fine. For purposes of this section "sidewalk" means a paved surface intended for pedestrian use which runs parallel to a public road within the public right-of-way."
