Five Things to Know About Darien: Jan. 19

A guide to today's local events, happenings, and more.

  • Winter Wonderland: Looks like we've got more snow on the way Thursday night into Friday, according to the National Weather Service. The Weather Channel's Jonathan Erdman writes that extent of the snowfall will depend on the position of a low pressure system off of the coast, so the storm could turn into "just a light snow brush" or yet another major event. Stay tuned.
  • Metro-North Changes: Several trains have been rescheduled or canceled today as crews work to repair damage to the overhead wires near Noroton Heights. .
  • Race to Nowhere: Darien High School will host three screenings today of the documentary Race to Nowhere, which examines the "the high-stakes, high-pressure culture that has invaded our schools and our children's lives." The screenings — 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 7 p.m. — are open to members of the public, but a free ticket is required for entry. • Town Meetings: The Commission on Aging meets today at 9:00 a.m. (Room 119), as does the Advisory Board of Health at 7:00 p.m. (Room 213) and the Zoning Board of Appeals at 7:45 p.m. (Room 206).
  • Comment of the (Yester)day: "Administrators in hindsight may be essentially asking to close the school ... because in effect by stating that there is no instruction going on for the first 90 minutes, there is a risk that a good chunk of students will not come to school on the entire day." -eat, replying to ""
