How The Memorial Day Parade Will Affect Traffic

The Darien Police Department has released a lengthy list of street closures and restrictions for the big event.

Monday's Town of Darien Memorial Day Parade will doubtless bring with it the familiar sights and sounds of the patriotic occasion: marching veterans, bright parade banners, and more than a few waving flags.

But like most good things, it's likely to bring some traffic, too.

In that vein, the Darien Police Department has just released a list of road closures and limitations for the big day. To make sure you don't get caught off guard on your way to (or past) the parade, Patch has put together a Google map of the restrictions, also cataloged below:

  • The parade starts at 10:00 a.m. at the Goodwives Shopping Center on Old Kings Highway North. From there it will proceed up Brookside Road, left onto Post Road, and westbound along the same until it reaches the vicinity of Spring Grove Cemetary.
  • No vehicles will be allowed on the Brookside Road or Old Kings Highway North approaches to the Goodwives Shopping Center after 8:00 a.m.
  • Vehicles participating in the parade, as well as those dropping off participants, should use Sedgewick Avenue or Mechanic Street for access to the Goodwives Shopping Center staging area.
  • No vehicles will be allowed to travel on Post Road between I-95 exit 13 and Old Kings Highway South during the parade.
  • On-street parking will be prohibited on Sedgewick Avenue, Mechanic Street, and Old Kings Highway North near the Goodwives Shopping Center entrance; and on Old Kings Highway South from Goodwives River Road to Post Road.
  • Darien Police advise motorists generally "to avoid the downtown area during the parade."

The department also reports that "a large contingent of Darien police officers will be assigned to traffic posts before and during the parade."
