New Haven Line Now Back on Track, Regular Schedule

Gov. Dannel Malloy's office late Thursday evening announced the reopening of the New Haven Line to regular commuter service this morning. A Metro-North spokesman confirmed Friday morning that the train line began operating on a regular schedule from New Haven to Grand Central Terminal.

Here's the full text of Malloy's announcement:

"As the result of night-and-day repairs and coordinated equipment logistics by a dedicated workforce in the wake of the devastation left by Hurricane Sandy, Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that regular weekday service will return Friday morning to the main line of the New Haven rail commuter line. In addition, the Governor said that train fares will be waived on Friday. The New Haven Line is operated by Metro-North under contract to the Connecticut Department of Transportation, and is the busiest rail line in America, serving some 125,000 daily commuters.

“Given the damage and disruption we sustained up and down the line as result of this storm, a return to full main line service in a matter of a few days is remarkable,” said Governor Malloy. “Metro-North workers were deployed immediately and have been working around the clock to return us to 100 percent service on the line between New Haven and New York. This is great news for commuters, our state and Connecticut’s economy. I thank everyone involved for their tireless efforts and commitment to customer service.”

"On Thursday, service returned between Stamford and New York’s Grand Central Terminal. Beginning Friday morning, regularly scheduled weekday service will resume on the entire line between New Haven and Grand Central Terminal. New Canaan, Danbury and Waterbury branch lines will be returned to service as soon as possible. There are approximately 38 million passenger trips annually on the New Haven Line.
