Rell Rallies Republican Vote

At a luncheon Friday, Governor M. Jodi Rell endorsed First Selectman Candidate Dave Campbell and Selectmen candidates Jerry Nielsen and Jayme Stevenson and reiterated the importance of casting a ballot.

“He who gets out the votes wins.” That was the message relayed and reiterated by Governor M. Jodi Rell at Friday afternoon’s luncheon for First Selectman Candidate Dave Campbell, and Selectmen candidates Jerry Nielsen and Jayme Stevenson.

Over 100 supporters gathered for the event, which took place at a private residence on Saint Nicholas Road. The purposes were many.

For one, the event provided an opportunity for candidates to further discuss and the issues facing Darien, both on a hyperlocal and State level.

“Jerry, Jayme and I want to change the tone in town and help in any way we can at the state level,” said Campbell in his crowd address. “All of our lives are affected by the decisions we make, and I believe together we can do the job for Darien and the State of Connecticut.”

For another, it was a chance for voters to celebrate and support the candidates’ efforts. The luncheon was catered by Michael Josephs and was “fun, tasteful and informal,” said "We Are United 2009" campaign member Amy Bell.

But perhaps most importantly, the luncheon served as what Bell described as a “grassroots, arm-twisting” reminder that voting counts.

“It’s not rocket science,” said Bell. “All the lawn signs and political mailings are great, but at the end of the day the person with the most votes wins. You’ve got to get people involved in voting and to encourage others to vote too.”

The event was free to attendees and funded by the campaign; an opportunity for voters to meet with and listen to the Governor. The last time Rell attended a campaign event in Darien was over five and a half years ago when she was lieutenant governor.

After an introduction by State Representative Terrie Wood, who said that the Governor inspired her to serve, Rell addressed the crowd of prospective voters:

“We continue to look for good, honest people who want to serve for the right reasons and Darien has a great opportunity with Dave, Jerry and Jayme.”

Rell emphasized the importance of supporting the candidates beyond the context of organized campaign events like the luncheon. She urged the crowd to call their friends and spread the word about the importance of casting a ballot Nov. 3.

“The best advertising is word of mouth,” said Rell. “He who gets out the vote wins.”
