Suicide Rates on the Rise in Connecticut

New Haven County had the highest suicide rates in the state in 2011, according to the New Haven Register.

The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is reporting that the state's actual suicide rates have been increasing over the past five years to more than one per day, according to the New Haven Register.

There were 371 suicides in Connecticut in 2011, which is considered low when compared to other states, but represents the highest rate in the past 22 years when compared to previous figures reported by the medical examiner.

New Haven County had 99 suicides in 2011, followed by 87 in Hartford County and 64 in Fairfield County. Counties with smaller populations had lower suicide rates: New London had 40 suicides in 2011, followed by 28 in Middlesex, 25 in Litchfield, 15 in Windham and eight in Tolland.

Last fall, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that in the U.S. among adults 18 and older in 2008 and 2009.
