A look at bear reported bear sightings in Connecticut through February of this year—including one from April of last year in Darien.

A bear was photographed and filmed in a Brookfield backyard Friday, the second over the last year according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), the agency that tracks Connecticut's wildlife.

According to the DEEP, 2,776 bears sightings were reported between April 2012 and February 2013, with the most coming from Farmington (239), Burlington (200) and Torrington (168).

The DEEP has this advice if you encounter a bear:

  • Enjoy it from a distance.
  • Advertise your presence by shouting and waving your arms or walk slowly away.
  • Never attempt to feed or attract bears.
  • Report bear sightings to the Wildlife Division, at (860) 675-8130.

The DEEP also has advice on the same Web page about how to avoid attracting bears to your home and what to do if you see a bear while hiking or camping.
